Summary: If you are involved in an accident with a reckless driver there are a number of steps you should take both for your health and to ensure your legal rights are protected.

This past weekend an accident caused by a red light runner took the lives of three teenagers and injured a couple of others.  The teens were on their way home from a graduation party on Friday night when their car was struck. After the accident the red light runner fled the scene showing no regard for the lives she just forever altered.  Thankfully police quickly found the driver and arrested her, charging her with four counts of failure to stop and render aid; however additional more serious charges are likely to be coming, especially if it is found that she was intoxicated at the time of the wreck.

If you are involved in an accident with a reckless driver there are a number of steps you should take both for your health and to ensure your legal rights are protected.  The first and most obvious step after a wreck is to check yourself and any other occupants of your vehicle for injuries, and to call for emergency help if needed.  In order to protect your right to hold the other person responsible for their recklessness you must attempt to get the other driver’s information.  You should attempt to quickly make a note of the other driver’s license plate number; this will help in identifying the other driver should he or she flee the scene without exchanging information.  Next, be sure to give the most accurate description of the situation to any police officers at the scene. The police report will be critically important both for insurance purposes and for any legal action to recover for injuries or damages.  Finally, it is important to speak with an attorney who will be able to assist you in attempting to get the justice you deserve from the other driver, as well as work on your behalf with any insurance claims.  The legal system can be a confusing and frustrating place to navigate alone;  however, having an experienced attorney on your side takes the pressure off of you and greatly increases your chances of obtaining a positive result.  Also, having an attorney shows both the other driver and insurance companies that you mean business and will help to keep your case from being brushed to the side.
