Patricia Barberis is a practicing lawyer in Torrance, CA. Ms. Barberis has been practice law since 1977. n her work as a Torrance divorce attorney, Patricia F. Barberis is described as tenacious, tough, always prepared, and a strong advocate who is willing to fight for her clients but is always polite and professional. Her goals are to help her clients through a difficult time in life, by helping them to understand the legal process, help them set goals they can achieve in their case and to address their issues in an understandable and honest manner. Her years as a nurse help her to understand people and their need for an advocate who is empathetic but who will advocate strongly on their behalf.

Please describe a case in the last year or two where you made a big difference.

I represented a father falsely accused of abusing his wife and daughter. I was able to have the restraining order dismissed, and my client got custody of the daughter. I represented a husband who had attempted mediation and been convinced to over pay child and spousal support. I took over representation, and was able to get a court order reducing support , custody time with father increased to meet his goal, and the assets divided equaly. I represented a full time mother who was receiving no support , and the working father demanded equal parenting time. The children would be placed in day care rather than with the mother. I was successful in getting a very good support and custody order for the mother.

How did you build a successful practice?

I am responsive to every client, and we determine their goals together, I then diligently pursue those goals on behalf of my client. I refused to be bullied or intimidated , I developed a reputation of being tenacious and strong, and the practice developed by personal referrals.

What should clients look for in a lawyer?

Clients should look for 10 years experience in practice, and that the lawyer limits their practice to one area of the law such as family law and divorce. The client should feel comfortable with the attorney, and the lawyer must keep the client informed about their case.

How important is local knowledge to the success of your cases?

Extremely important. Each judge has their own personality and preferences. The lawyer should be able to present the case in a manner that takes that into consideration to maximize the potential for obtaining the clients goals

What information can you provide in a free phone consultation?

I do not do free phone consultations. I believe it is important for the attorney and client to meet in person. I can t obtain more facts and ensure the client understands my advise if we meet in person. The client can also determine if they are comfortable with me, and can relate to me. What information do you need in aconsultation? I prefer a 30 to 45 minute in person consultation where I can gather facts accurately, determine the legal issues and ensure the client understands the legal issues and possible outcome. We offer a discounted, reasonable initial consultation fee.

What differentiates you from other lawyers in your community?

I am one of the most experienced family law attorneys in our area, and I limit my practice to family law so I can devote all my time to keeping current in the area of family kaw. The law and court rules in the area of divorce and family law change frequently and it is essential to stay current with those changes. I have an excellent track record and prepare each case completely before going into settlement or litigation. Among the judicial officers I am know for always being prepared and knowledgeable.

What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?

To have a client say ""Thank you Pat, you fought really hard for me."" Or "" Thank you Pat, I feel better now knowing someone understands and can help me.""

What are your other interests in addition to law?

Family including my grandchildren, church , golf, reading

Are you involved in your community?

I serve as mediator in the south bay legal community. Attend and support my church regularly.

Physician Obtains Downward Modification to Alimony Obligation
In a post-judgment divorce action, a physician was successful in obtaining a downward modification to his alimony obligation due to a substantial decrease in his income.  The parties were divorced back in 2007, and pursuant to the judgment of dissolution, the husband was required to pay alimony to the wife in the amount of $6,000 per month for a period of eleven months, followed by $5,000 per month thereafter.  The amount of the alimony obligation was modifiable upon a substantial change in circumstances in accordance with Connecticut General Statutes § 46b-86.
In Post Judgment Divorce Action, Court Determines that $1.2 Million Payment to Husband was Income, Not Liquidation of an Asset
In a post-judgment decision rendered, the Superior Court of Fairfield at Bridgeport addressed whether a payment that a husband received from his employer after the parties’ divorce constituted an asset or, alternatively, income.  The parties in this action obtained an uncontested divorce in 2008.  As part of their separation agreement, the husband was obligated to pay the wife child support in the amount of $1,600.00 per month.
Child Care Costs and the Connecticut Child Support Guidelines
In a decision rendered previously, the Connecticut Appellate Court explained the definition of “child care costs” as set forth in the Connecticut Child Support Guidelines.  In that particular case, the parties were married for approximately five years and were the parents of two minor children.  During the year of 2003, they entered into a custody stipulation which was subsequently incorporated into a comprehensive separation agreement.  The separation agreement provided that the husband would pay the wife $2,500 per month in unallocated alimony and child support for a period of five years, followed by straight child support.
