Please include all relevant details from your case including where, when, and who it involves. Case details that can effectively describe the legal situation while also staying concise generally receive the best responses from lawyers.

Please describe a case in the last year or two where you made a big difference.

Case #1: I assisted a family of five members in obtaining their lawful permanent resident status. Due to the visa number availability limitation, the family could not apply until August 1, but they had to complete the application before September 30th. If not, they would have lost their opportunity to obtain their status. Ordinarily, this process would take about 4-6 months. I worked hard to coordinate with the US CIS offices in Portland, Oregon to set up their interview, and sought outside help from the Senator's office. My clients got their interview in early September, and received their status before the deadline. Case#2: Another case I worked on involved a client who had been represented by another attorney before and whose case got denied by the immigration court in Portland. I helped him file an appeal with the Board of Immigration Appeals. The appeal was successful, and the case was remanded by the BIA to the immigration court for further proceedings. Before the immigration court, I helped the client file all necessary documents, and persuaded the court to reverse its prior denial decision.

How did you build a successful practice?

When I first began my practice, I was working for a local law firm. The firm did not have an immigration practice, so I took the initiative to create immigration practice at the firm. I started with only one client, then two, and more. After four year working at the firm, I decided to set up my own practice. My hard work on client cases, responsiveness to client inquiries and creativity in finding workable solutions are very important. I also have had a very good track records, obtaining good results in some difficult cases. My advertisement has been chiefly relying on word of mouth of former clients even though I have done phone book listing and ad.

What should clients look for in a lawyer?

Fully understanding the facts and laws; finding workable solutions to client's legal issues; providing professional, dependable and cost effective legal services.

How important is local knowledge to the success of your cases?

Immigration law is federal law, so local knowledge is not very important. What information can you provide in a consultation? I don't provide free phone consultation. When callers ask questions, I do answer them depending on the complexity of the questions. If I feel it is just a simple question, I will try to answer it on the phone. But if I feel the question need me to know more about the person and facts, I offer an office consultation. I charge $80 for an office consultation.

What differentiates you from other lawyers in your community?

I have more than 15 years of work experience in immigration law practice. I have a very good track records. I also provide community support.

What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?

The most rewarding aspect of my job is my work helps family members stay together in the U.S. Over the last 15 years, I have helped hundreds of families - wives, husbands and their minor children- continue their residence in the US and work hard to make their American dream come true. When I see these families together in the US that I have helped, I always feel good about my job.

What are your other interests in addition to law?

Hiking, reading and gardening.

Are you involved in your community?

Yes, I am involved in our local community. I provided immigration counseling at CentraLatino for the last two years. I am a member on the advisory committee for English as second language at the local college. I volunteer as a debate judge at my children's school.

Fee: The firm offers clients a flexible fee structure for its services. For initial consultation, the firm charges $80.00, which covers the attorney time up to one half-hour. The firm often offers its clients the flexibility of two fee options: a flat fee or an hourly fee. Some clients feel comfortable with the flat fee because they know upfront how much their case will cost them. SAMPLE LEGAL CASES

Physician Obtains Downward Modification to Alimony Obligation
In a post-judgment divorce action, a physician was successful in obtaining a downward modification to his alimony obligation due to a substantial decrease in his income.  The parties were divorced back in 2007, and pursuant to the judgment of dissolution, the husband was required to pay alimony to the wife in the amount of $6,000 per month for a period of eleven months, followed by $5,000 per month thereafter.  The amount of the alimony obligation was modifiable upon a substantial change in circumstances in accordance with Connecticut General Statutes § 46b-86.
In Post Judgment Divorce Action, Court Determines that $1.2 Million Payment to Husband was Income, Not Liquidation of an Asset
In a post-judgment decision rendered, the Superior Court of Fairfield at Bridgeport addressed whether a payment that a husband received from his employer after the parties’ divorce constituted an asset or, alternatively, income.  The parties in this action obtained an uncontested divorce in 2008.  As part of their separation agreement, the husband was obligated to pay the wife child support in the amount of $1,600.00 per month.
Child Care Costs and the Connecticut Child Support Guidelines
In a decision rendered previously, the Connecticut Appellate Court explained the definition of “child care costs” as set forth in the Connecticut Child Support Guidelines.  In that particular case, the parties were married for approximately five years and were the parents of two minor children.  During the year of 2003, they entered into a custody stipulation which was subsequently incorporated into a comprehensive separation agreement.  The separation agreement provided that the husband would pay the wife $2,500 per month in unallocated alimony and child support for a period of five years, followed by straight child support.
