Deke was born in Houston, Texas to an American father and a Venezuelan mother. When he was three years old his family moved to Denton, Texas, and built a low-impact solar-powered house from the ground up. During this time, Deke's mother owned and taught at a Montessori School and his father established himself as a computer programmer and information systems specialist. Around 1990, Deke's father got a job offer in Huntsville, Alabama and the family moved there during Deke's four years of high school. After graduation, Deke was ready to return to his native Texas. In 1994, he accepted an academic scholarship to attend Southwestern University and moved to Georgetown, Texas. After two years of college, Deke and a close friend decided to take a year off to work and "road trip" across the West. During this enlightening year Deke became very interested in humanities, the origins of our beliefs and customs, and in ancient civilizations, so he transferred to the University of Texas to study Anthropology and Communications. He graduated with his Bachelor's Degree  from U.T. in 1999.

While Deke was at the University of Texas he asked himself an important question: What career do I want to pursue to best contribute something valuable to my local community? The natural answer at the time was teaching. This led him to pursue a teaching position in a progressive children's education program in Austin, Texas. During the seven years as a Lead Teacher and an Assistant Director of the school, Deke also performed live music as a vocalist and percussionist, and participated in the organization and promotion of numerous musical public benefits.

By 2005, Deke got married. By this time he was ready for a new challenge and a new way of assisting the community. Deke had always been interested in law and so he began applying to law schools on the East and West coasts. When the University of Miami School of Law offered him the prestigious Miami Scholars Scholarship, a scholarship reserved for students who have strong academic credentials and who have demonstrated a strong dedication to public service, Deke knew where he would be for the next three years.

During law school, Deke made the Dean's List every semester, achieved the grades necessary to join the Inter-American Law Review as an Associate Editor, competed his way onto one of the highest ranked Moot Court Boards in the country, and served as Public Relations Officer for the International Law Society. After three years of unwinding on south Florida's beaches and the Florida Keys, Deke graduated from law school Magna Cum Laude.

Deke and his wife Stacey became the parents of a little girl while they were in Florida.  After graduation, they decided it was time to return to Austin, Texas to be near family and friends. As providence would have it, Deke was put back in touch with Judy Leecraft, who had a thriving family law practice in the heart of Austin, and began his legal career working in an environment in which he had already invested so much of his life -- children and families. As a former educator and community activist, Deke brings a unique perspective to the problems families face during divorce and custody disputes. Because of his background, his studies, and his unique experiences, Deke is a formidable advocate for the best interests of children.

Las Vegas' Adverse Possession Law
Adverse possession is the legal concept that if the owner of the land isn’t using it, and someone else is giving the land a useful purpose for long enough, the law favors the useful purpose over the land being left unused.
