James S. Hamman, Attorney

Mr. Hamman received his Bachelor of Arts in 1983 from St. Xavier University in Chicago, Illinois. In pursuit of his degree, Mr. Hamman attended six other colleges and universities in three different states, including Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and Franklin University in Columbus, Ohio while working as a sales representative. He obtained his Juris Doctor degree in 1987 from the John Marshall Law School in Chicago, Illinois. He is a member of the Workers' Compensation Lawyers Association, the Illinois Trial Lawyers Association, the Illinois State Bar Association, the Chicago Bar Association, the Will County Bar Association and the South Suburban Bar Association.

Prior to joining the firm, Mr. Hamman practiced with a law firm that specialized in insurance defense. His experience on the defense side of cases has been of considerable value to him in determining optimum strategies for settlement of cases or in preparation for trial. He now concentrates exclusively in representing injured parties in personal injury and workers compensation claims. Mr. Hamman has successfully argued several workers compensation cases before the Illinois Appellate Court. He has represented injured workers against numerous employers, including: The City of Chicago; The Chicago Board of Education; The Chicago Park District; The State of Illinois; Cook County; the CTA; Pace; Ford; UPS; Coca-Cola; Yellow Freight; United Airlines; Southwest Airlines; and various hospitals, manufacturers and municipalities, to name a few. He is active in the Workers' Compensation Bar.

• An award of Permanent Total Disability benefits for a Chicago school teacher who fractured her hip when she was knocked to the floor during a student altercation.
  A settlement in the amount of $370,000 for an injured municipality laborer who was unable to return to his job as a laborer.
  A settlement in the amount of $250,000 for an injured municipality laborer who was unable to return to his job as a laborer. As part of that settlement, the insurer agreed to fund a Social Security set-aside account in the amount of $65,000.
  In a totally contested case, the petitioner slipped and fell and injured his hip but medical evidence was produced that indicated the client's condition was congenital (from birth). Mr. Hamman was able to obtain a settlement of $125,000.
  A $125,000 settlement for a nurse who injured her back while working at Ingalls Memorial Hospital and who returned to the workplace earning more in her new supervisory position than she had before the accident.
  An offer of settlement in the amount of $450,000 for an automotive master mechanic, which offer was rejected as Mr. Hamman pursued a vocational rehabilitation program that was denied by the insurer in the Illinois Appellate Court.
  A settlement in the amount of $175,000 for a commercial laundry worker who injured his back when a wheel on the laundry cart he was pushing became stuck.
  A settlement in the amount of $110,000 for a retail sales manager who fell in a stock room and injured her knee. As part of the settlement, the insurer also funded a necessary Social Security set-aside account.
  A settlement in the amount of $90,000 for an undocumented worker who injured his back while lifting roofing materials.
  A settlement in the amount of $50,000 for a home health care nurse who injured her knee when she tripped and fell on an uneven floor surface.
  A settlement in the amount of $35,000 for a worker in a state mental health facility who injured her shoulder while restraining a patient.
