In 2005 J.R. was Chief of the Gang Unit and in 2007 he became Chief of the Narcotics Unit until he entered private practice in 2008 More than any other area of law, experience is crucial for an attorney representing individuals in criminal cases. Over the last 12 years , J.R. has built a well established and solid reputation among his peers, prosecutors and Judges in Maryland as a skilled Criminal Attorney. He has gained immeasurable criminal trial experience as a prosecutor and now uses that experience as a criminal defense attorney at Francomano & Francomano. Please describe a case in the last year or two where you made a big difference.

J.R. Francomano argued a motion to suppress the confession and arrest of his client in a DUI case in Baltimore County District Court. His client ran into a parked car and blew a .10 and confessed to Police. The State tried to introduce this information into evidence, but J.R. who is well versed in the law of search and seizure and confessions, argued that all of that information was fruits of the poisonous tree. J.R. argued that the Police violated his clients constitutional rights and the Judge agreed. A motion was granted and client was found Not Guilty. Client was charged with Possession with the Intent to Distribute Marijuana over 50 lbs. State wanted client to plead to 5 yrs without parole. J.R. spent the better part of the year trying to get this case to trial. He hired an expert to weigh the Marijuana, filed motions for the State and the Baltimore City Police Department to produce the Marijuana to be weighed. Finally, at a hearing the State's expert witness admitted that she was not able to accurately weigh the Marijuana. The State had to drop the mandatory five years without parole and client received a suspended sentence and will receive a Probation Before Judgment at the end of the year.

How did you build a successful practice?

J.R. Francomano has extensive trial experience, exceptional legal knowledge, and the ability to represent a client in all areas of criminal defense. Over the last 17 years, J.R. has built a well established and solid reputation among his peers, prosecutors and Judges in Maryland as a skilled Criminal Attorney. He has gained immeasurable criminal trial experience as a prosecutor in Harford County and Baltimore County and as a Criminal Defense Attorney for the last 7 years.

What should clients look for in a lawyer?

Experience as a criminal defense attorney, knowledge of criminal law, local knowledge, and someone who will not just tell you what you want to hear to get your money, but someone who will tell you what the real consequences may be and what we can do together to get the best possible result.

How important is local knowledge to the success of your cases?

It is very important to know what a particular judge will do in any given situation, and the only way to know that is to practice in front of them constantly as J.R. has done for the last 17 years. With some Judges it could be the difference between going to jail and not going to jail.

What information can you provide in a free phone consultation?

J.R. can explain what the maximum and minimum sentences are. What a client should do before the case goes to trial. Whether or not there may be a defense to the case. What if any motions should be filed.

What information do you need in a free phone consultation?

Full name, charges and summary facts.

What differentiates you from other lawyers in your community?

Lived in this community most of my life. Former Hartford Count Prosecutor and Baltimore County Prosecutor, where J.R. was chief of the Gang Unity and Felony Narcotics Unit.

What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?

Helping people that are in some really bad situations. That each case you try you learn something new, and that most people given the chance are generally good.

What are your other interests in addition to law?

Golfing, Skiing, Scuba Diving, time with my family.

Adverse possession is the legal concept that if the owner of the land isn’t using it, and someone else is giving the land a useful purpose for long enough, the law favors the useful purpose over the land being left unused.
