introduction
QUESTIONNAIRE
I represented a 46 yr old UPS driver who slipped and fell on ice in a driveway while delivering a package. Other lawyers rejected his case fearing liability could not be established because it has snowed within 12 hours of his fall. I took the case and through discovery established that homeowner had ordered some items online through Ebay and was expecting their delivery on the date of plaintiff's fall. I also retained the services of a weather expert to testify that the snow storm had ended approximately 9 hours prior to his fall. These facts - the homeowner expecting a package delivery that day together with sufficient time during the day to treat the accumulate snow and ice on the driveway prior to the plaintiff's arrival, helped establish liability. I retained the services of a vocational rehabilitation expert to testify regarding the plaintiff's inability to return to his line of work as a parcel delivery man due to the nature and extent of his injuries. I retained the services of an expert economist to calculate his lost past earnings and future impaired earnings. The case ultimately settled at a mediation a month before trial for $1,100,000.00.
How did you build a successful practice?I have built my practice based upon a 20 yr track record of results. My practice is largely derived from referrals from other attorneys. I am personally involved from start to finish in every case I take. I do not hand off cases to junior lawyers.
What should clients look for in a lawyer?Clients should look for a lawyer with a proven record of success, experience in the field and a lawyer who is responsive to their calls. In Connecticut, the lawyer should be a member of the Connecticut Trial Lawyers Association, should maintain valid professional liability insurance and should maintain an AV rating with Martindale-Hubbell.
How important is local knowledge to the success of your cases? While Connecticut is a small state, the attorney hired to handle the case must have experience in the particular courthouse where the case will be filed. This experience is important because it will establish credibility with the insurance company, the lawyer hired by the insurance company to represent its insured, and the Judges in the courthouse where the case will be filed and tried if necessary. My practice is statewide. I have handled and tried cases throughout the entire state, and regularly handle matters in all courthouses throughout the state.
What information can you provide in a free phone consultation? In a free phone consultation I can learn more about your situation and give you some feedback on what to expect in the process, including a rough estimate of how long the process might last. I can also give my sense about the strengths and weaknesses of the case. Finally, I can advise you on the prudent and appropriate steps to take to preserve your claim.
What differentiates you from other lawyers in your community? There are at least a few things that differentiate me from other lawyers in my community. First, I have tried dozens of cases. Surprisingly, many lawyers actually have very little courtroom trial experience. Second, I previously worked as an attorney hired by insurance companies to defend their insureds. I have personal, firsthand experience of how insurance companies think, what they are looking for and how they defend claims. Finally, I personally handle every case that I agree to take. I do not hand off cases to junior, less experienced lawyers. When you hire me, you know you are getting me, not anyone else.
What is the most rewarding aspect of your job? When my clients come to me, typically their life has been turned upside because of injuries and losses suffered due to the carelessness of someone else. I enjoy help people work through what usually and unfamiliar process, and I take great satisfaction knowing that I am able to hold accountable those whose carelessness causes harm to others while at the same time helping my clients get their lives and affairs back in order.
Are you involved in your community?I have been actively involved in my community over the years, typically volunteering my time in youth sports programs. I have coached both youth baseball and youth football. I served as President of the local youth football league for 2 years. Presently, I work as a youth/high school football referee when I am not working as a lawyer.
