Please describe a case(s) in the last year or two where you made a big difference.
In a recent case prosecuted by our law firm, a young family tragically lost a husband and father. He was burned over 80% of body from a flash fire and explosion at an oil and gas well location in the Permian Basin. At first, almost all authorities contended that the flash fire and explosion incident was somehow caused by this young man’s own negligence or that of his own employer. The family of this young man was in a desperate state, in addition to immense grief, fear overtook his surviving wife and children about their future – How would they be able to pay their mounting bills? Who would take care of the children, ages 4, 9 and 11, while their mother had to work for minimum wage? Would their children ever be able to afford to go to college? Fortunately, the family retained our law firm to investigate the incident and quickly preserve the evidence at the scene. After months of hard work and determination, we successfully established that the fire was not caused by the victim, but rather it was actually caused from the negligence and wrongful conduct by others employed by a different company. We were able to successfully negotiate a confidential settlement providing substantial money damages for the family; and although no amount of money can substitute for the loss of their husband and father, they will never have to worry about their economic security again, college has been prepaid and their future has no limits. Even after the final resolution of their case, our firm continues to help and advice the family whenever we are called upon. What should clients look for in a lawyer?
After an accident or tragedy, avoid lawyers who make unsolicited contact with you, avoid lawyers who offer to pay bills or buy things for you in exchange for hiring them, and avoid lawyers who make promises without completing an investigation. Clients should find a lawyer that will take the time to investigate their case, discuss the facts with them and agree to prepare their case for trial – not just a quick settlement. Clients should also investigate the lawyer, just like any other professional, by, at least, consulting the Bar Association online in the state where the lawyer resides for valid licensure and any prior grievances or reprimands.
