I resolved a DWI from 2012 in May of 2017. The client was originally charged with DWI for suspicion of prescription drugs. The client was leaving her home at 9:00 AM to go to the Doctor's office. She turned around to go back to her house when she noticed her colostomy bag was leaking. Her mirror bumped a mailbox when she was making her U-turn. The client did not notice that her mirror had bumped the mailbox, as the mirror did not fold back. The police showed up at her home and arrested her for suspicion of DWI for prescription drugs. She was convicted for DWI in District Court, without the blood test results coming back from the lab. We appealed her case to Superior Court.How did you build a successful practice?

Fresh out of law school, I associated myself with an experienced attorney in Wilmington. After working with him for several years, I took my experience and opened my practice. The biggest lesson I learned from him was the importance of communicating with my clients.

Clients should look for an attorney who is going to give their case the proper attention and care. Look for someone who specializes in the area in which they need help. For example, I focus my practice on criminal law.

Local knowledge is very important to the success of your case for several reasons. Different judges have different "pet peeves" about certain cases. Knowing the preference of the judges helps attorneys decide the route to defend their clients.

In a phone consultation, I can typically map out the plan to handle their case, what sort of consequences the client is facing, and the cost of representation. Most clients find that I can answer almost all of their questions in a phone consultation.

I need to know the client's name, the offense, and the circumstances surrounding the clients arrest.

The biggest difference between myself and other attorneys in the community is my experience. My time as a police officer has given me a unique knowledge of law enforcement tactics and procedures.

The most rewarding aspect of my job is when I can help a client who has given up hope. Many of my clients feel they have been treated badly by the system and no one will fight for them. I have had several clients tell me that no one has ever fought for them as hard as I did. This is how I know I did a good job for my clients.

I have many other interests other than law. I am an avid hunter and fisherman. I love to travel and discover new cultures. I am a history fanatic/geek.

I am involved in many different aspects of the community. I have participated in Lawyers for Literacy, a reading program for youth. I was on the board of the Wilmington Riverfest. I am a member of the U.S.S. North Carolina Battleship Commission since 2013.
