Please describe a case(s) in the last year or two where you made a big difference.
First Degree sexual assault case in DC 2014 – case was dismissed after we investigated, challenged the complaining witness, presented contradictory evidence, and refused to relent or accept a plea. Immigration defense case, 2013, where our client was repeatedly attacked in jail for being transgender. Despite an extensive criminal past, including multiple crimes involving moral turpitude, was awarded relief from removal. Our client now has a work permit and will be permitted to remain in the US. DUI defense case, 2014, involving a refusal to provide a breath sample, and reckless driving (with destruction of property). Went to trial and was awarded an acquittal as a result of our relentless hammering of the prosecutions case. Divorce case in 2013 where we were brought in at the very end of the case – only two weeks before trial on the merits. Involved well over $4 million in assets, including multiple houses and business interests. Avoided the trial and received the best settlement (over $600,000 and a 1.5 million dollar home to our client) for our client by aggressively preparing for trial, and making quite clear to the opposing side – we will fight.

How did you build a successful practice?
We use word of mouth advertising, CraigsList, and various lead referral services. We are also sought out on immigration cases as expert consultants throughout the East Coast.

What should clients look for in a lawyer?
Honesty and a willingness to be candid. Bad advice, or hiding issues, does nothing for a case. Right up there, though, is confidence. A lawyer (especially a trial attorney) must be confident. A good trial attorney should be an excellent interrogator, and skilled at ferreting out information from clients and witnesses alike.

How important is local knowledge to the success of your cases?
Minimally important. Helpful to know the judges and the prosecutors, but ultimately, confidence and a affable demeanor can offset knowledge of the local court. In Virginia, this is not always the case. In VA, knowing the various circuit court idiosyncrasies can be very important.

What information can you provide in a free phone consultation?
We usually try to review the basic facts of the case and next steps.

What information do you need in a free phone consultation?
Name, location of the case (not where the person lives – but where the court that is hearing the case is located), facts concerning the case, and whether the client can pay the initial $1500 retainer (standard retainer in most cases).

What differentiates you from other lawyers in your community?
I think our style, approachable nature, and candid assessment of the case and situation is refreshing. All the lawyers in the firm are experienced trial attorneys. We have confidence and an easy manner that sets clients at ease.

What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?

What are your other interests in addition to law?
I enjoy web programming, racquet ball, and travel. Visiting jails is a favorite past-time.

Are you involved in your community?
Yes. Hanover Law has an active program with the Lamb Center, a non-profit day shelter in Fairfax, Virginia. We help out weekly with free legal consultations (generally on Tuesdays, but occasionally on Thursdays as needed).
