When I first started my own law firm, a wise older lawyer once told me that if you do good work for your clients, everything else will take care of itself. Running a law firm is complicated but that core principle is true. First, a client should make sure that the lawyer has experience handling their particular type of case. A lawyer who primarily does criminal defense is not going to do a good job handling a personal injury case. Second, a client should make sure that their lawyer is responsive and able to explain to them the strengths and weaknesses of their cases and potential outcomes. If a lawyer is unable to return your calls/emails promptly, this is a huge red flag that your case is not a priority and your lawyer is not devoting the attention required to your case.
