How did you build a successful practice? I think that solving my client’s problems and being effective is the number one most important way to build a practice. That’s the end goal, but along the way, you must return calls and emails promptly, be a woman of your word and follow through on what you say you’ll do and be able to negotiate well. I am also a renaissance woman and can do a lot of stuff effectively and efficiently - I learned how to build websites, use excel for billing and time keeping and I run a lean practice.
What should clients look for in a lawyer? The most important thing to look for is someone you can trust and confide in. Then you have to ask what your goals are – if it’s to draft a contract – then the lawyer should know the industry and practice in that area. If your goal is to force someone to do something – like refund money or cease and desist, then you better make sure your lawyer can be tough. Lastly, you need to find a lawyer you can afford, but don’t be pennywise and pound foolish. One cheap lawyer can take three times as long as someone more experienced.
How important is local knowledge to the success of your cases? Sometimes it matters, such as when a client is having issues with property or was injured in a particular location. Knowing about Manhattan Beach ordinances and restrictions would not have been as apparent if I hadn’t previously advocated for a local non-profit and spent time in the city. Being able to advise clients about competitors because I see the competition is also unique to having local knowledge. Other times, it can help with referrals to other lawyers who might better connect with the client being that they are in the area. All that being said, I’ve been retained by people around the world when disputes erupt in CA for non-residents or in other countries when my CA client wants my representation and I can discern international or out-of-state laws swiftly through co-counseling or researching.
What information can you provide in a free phone consultation? The most important information that I like to provide in a consult is how I operate and how we can achieve the client’s goals. I also like to show that I am a good listener and can either handle the matter or refer it to someone else.
What information do you need in a free phone consultation? I just need to know the facts of what happened or what the objectives are for hiring an attorney. Sometimes it helps to have documents sent to me, but that’s for me to glance at.
What differentiates you from other lawyers in your community? My friend said it best when he wrote: Suzanne is a very strong advocate for her clients. She is one of the most versatile lawyers I have met, and she has creative solutions to challenging issues. In one instance, I saw her bring her father, another great lawyer, onto a phone call to help mediate a dispute. I highly recommend Suzanne as a general business lawyer, whether the work involved is transactional in nature or litigation.
What is the most rewarding aspect of your job? When I get to celebrate a victory with my clients! What are your other interests in addition to law?
My goals for life include optimal love, happiness, health, wisdom and wealth. I am very interested in preventive medicine, playing sports, ACTIVities, new technology, sightseeing, traveling abroad, volunteering and professional networking.
Are you involved in your community? Yes, I offer pro bono legal advice for close friends through an organization that I founded, I am the Westside Ambassador for the National Association of Women Business Owners and I do a lot of sporadic volunteering in a variety of ways like making dolls for hospitalized children, painting murals over graffiti and making emergency kits for homeless people.
