introduction
QUESTIONNAIRE
In a recent auto-accident case, my client's car was totaled and she suffered several herniated discs, a broken shoulder and a broken back. Unfortunately, she did not have health insurance, but obviously needed pro-longed medical treatment. Through our established contacts, my firm was able to find her an orthopedic surgeon who operated on a lien. On the business and contract side of my practice, I represented an engineering firm in lawsuit where they had been sued for specific performance, and we countersued successfully for prior breach and lost contractual profits.
How did you build a successful practice?I keep my practice deliberately small so that I can give my clients the personal service they deserve. I also strive to balance my hourly client roster with my contingency personal injury roster of clients to maintain the firm's overall financial health and give my clients the best possible personalized advice. Clients know that I am accessible and responsive to their inquiries. My personal attention to the details of each client's case also, I believe, results in higher returns and greater client satisfaction than it is possible to achieve at a larger law firms.
What should clients look for in a lawyer?Personal injury clients should look for lawyers who are upfront about their chances for success, and what the breakdown of any settlement will be, including projected expenses, medical liens and attorney's fees. A reputable attorney will meet with you initially for free, however the second meeting maybe the one that tells you the most about the law firm. In that second meeting, make sure you have adequate time to discuss your case with your lawyer. If you are passed off to a paralegal or associate, you may want to rethink your relationship. For contract and business clients, again, the attorney should be upfront and realistic about your chances for success versus potential liability exposure, expenses and fees. All the risks of litigation should be explained, including the potential for any counter or cross claims Additionally, you should review your bills to make sure that you are not being billed for partner and associate hours for the same work. Finally, you should look for an attorney who has previous experience in the type of claim, or contract, or venture, you are pursuing. You do not want to pay for someone to reinvent the wheel.
How important is local knowledge to the success of your cases?Local knowledge is a significant factor to be considered when making strategic decisions like where to file a lawsuit. My practice takes me all over metro-Atlanta and for those areas where I am unfamiliar with the judges or opposing counsel, I network with other attorneys to ascertain strategies based on local venues.
What information can you provide in a free phone consultation? In a free phone consultation, I can usually obtain enough information to decide if the matter is something that would benefit from a person-to-person meeting, or if it something that my firm may not handle or be able to handle at that time. In situations where I cannot help the caller, I always try to give them the names of three other lawyers in the area who may be willing to talk to them and take their case.
What differentiates you from other lawyers in your community?I believe that my commitment to keeping my practice small so that I can give each of my clients my absolute best differentiates me from other law firms. I will not take your case if I do not believe that I have the time to go at it 110%.
What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?Obviously succeeding for my clients is the most rewarding aspect of my job.
What are your other interests in addition to law?In addition to law, I write fiction books, paint portraits and run a lot - albeit very slowly.
Are you involved in your community?I am very involved in the Rockdale County area. My law firm has been at my present location for over fourteen years, and my family has lived in the county for almost 30 years. My husband was the District Attorney here for nearly 20 years and all three of our children graduated from public schools.
