Please describe a case in the last year or two where you made a big difference.

Three recent cases come to mind. I represented a thirteen year old charged with attempted first degree murder, aggravated battery with a firearm and petit theft. By the time I was retained by the family, the child had already been filed on as an adult and he had been in the county jail for three months with no bond. The case was in the media and the Sheriff's Office and State Attorney's Office were identifying my client as the shooter based on the victim's statement and text records. I quickly set a bond motion and was able to get the child out on bond. From that point, we litigated the case for about a year. With the help of a private investigator I retained, we gathered a substantial amount of phone records and social media data to put together a strong case that my client was not present at the scene when this shooting occurred. In deposition, I was able to get the victim to change his previous statement to law enforcement and state that it was possible my client was not there at the time. A week before the trial the State dismissed both the attempted first degree murder charge and the aggravated battery with a firearm charge. I represented a man accused of felony battery on a law enforcement officer, resisting arrest and another battery on a civilian. Law enforcement stated that my client punched a bouncer and when the police intervened he tackled the police. The police made the criminal case a high priority because they ultimately deployed a taser to my client. I was able to locate a few witness who had partially videoed the events. However, the State Attorney's Office was still backing their officers so we took on the officers and took the case to a jury trial. Cross examination of the officers made them look like the aggressors and not my client. Jury acquitted my client. I represented a family in a civil, personal injury case in Federal court. Their son ran from the police, was caught and was shot and killed during the struggle. Law enforcement claimed to the media that the officer was acting in self defense. Neither the law enforcement agency or internal affairs did anything to punish the officer. There was no money offered pre-suit as they completely denied any wrongdoing. So we filed a lawsuit in Federal Court claiming the officer used excessive, unnecessary force in killing the son. We litigated the case for over a year including hundreds of hours of depositions and expert testimony from both sides. We were willing to take the case to trial despite knowing that there was a chance that the jury could possibly find the officer not at fault and give us nothing. Our persistence paid off and the case settled just before trial for a substantial, confidential settlement amount. It won't bring back their son, but the parents and brother certainly appreciated that someone was willing to take on the fight and not let this law enforcement agency get off as if their officer had done nothing wrong.

How did you build a successful practice?

I realize that I work for the client and that they have come to me in a time of need. I set goals with the clients on achieving a possible outcome and work tirelessly to achieve a positive result. Along with the hard work, my clients appreciate my attention to detail and availability to their needs and questions. I do not do any big advertising such as TV, billboards or radio, so my success depends mostly on client referrals.

What should clients look for in a lawyer?

It is important that the lawyer appears to be up front and honest and not throwing out promises and guarantees just to get the case and the client's money. The client should know what the lawyer's plan would be if hired and the possible outcomes. The client should also know whether the lawyer will be handling all aspects of the case or delegating to his paralegals and associates, and that the lawyer will be available to the client on short notice.

What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?

Seeing how the positive outcome achieved on their case has helped turn their life around for the better. I receive numerous thank you cards and Holiday cards from clients every year. Going back and reading through those makes me realize why I work so hard for them.

Are you involved in your community?

I volunteer at the Orlando Rescue Mission.

Las Vegas' Adverse Possession Law
Adverse possession is the legal concept that if the owner of the land isn’t using it, and someone else is giving the land a useful purpose for long enough, the law favors the useful purpose over the land being left unused.
