My client was required to register as a sex offender because of an unfortunate misunderstanding in his youth. He has never been a dangerous person. Years later, he came to visit his relative in Georgia for a short weekend. The local sheriff had an encounter with him and decided he had violated the law by failing to register as a sex offender, even though he was just visiting. On the witness stand, I got the sheriff to admit that, even though she was the resident expert, she had not bothered to look at the actual law pertaining to my client's situation. I was able to get the felony dismissed and him released from custody.
