Questions & Answers

Please describe a case in the last year or two where you made a big difference.

We recently won a remand from the Supreme Court after fighting for 15 years for a catastrophically injured client. He passed away the next day. My father had promised him that we would never give up, and it was one of the most rewarding experiences of my life to be able to fulfill that promise and give him that final gift of closure.

How did you build a successful practice?

We take the time to get to know our clients, their families, and how their injuries have impacted their lives.

What should clients look for in a lawyer?

I would personally never hire a lawyer who promises to get me money "fast" or is trying to handle too many cases at once. Law firms focused on taking in as many cases as they can and settling them as quickly as possible seem more like factories than zealous advocates to me. Personal injury cases are not products for profit, they are hurt people whose lives have been interrupted, upended, or even destroyed. They put an enormous amount of trust in us as lawyers when they ask for our help, and that is a privilege I take very seriously.

How important is local knowledge to the success of your cases?

This varies by case. Personally, I would prefer to hire a law firm or attorney with a recognizable name and a good reputation in the local community. They wouldn't have either of those things without relatively good character, work ethic, and valuable skills. There have been times I have consulted or associated a local attorney on cases in cities or towns where I don't regularly practice because I felt their knowledge, connections, or reputation could somehow benefit my client.

What information can you provide in a free phone consultation?

I can't give sepcific legal advice unless the caller and I agree to enter into an attorney-client relationship. The first thing I can tell someone is whether or not I think I can help them and why. If it isn't something I can help them with, I do try to at least point them in the right direction either by answering general questions about the typical case process or by referring them somewhere else for help.

What information do you need in a free phone consultation?

The basic details of your case. For a car accident, the lawyer would need to know when it happened, what injuries you sustained, the basic facts of what happened, whether the officer found you at fault, and whether there were any aggravating factors such as intoxication.

What differentiates you from other lawyers in your community?

I feel extremely lucky to have been born and raised in Charleston and to have had a father and grandfather who also practiced law here. My first lesson was a harsh one on the humbling topic of just how little I knew- about everything. I was able to build upon generations of wisdom, experience, and relationships and recognized from the start that this was an advantage in my development and never-ending education as a lawyer. The most valuable knowledge and skills in this profession can't be found in any book. If a lawyer is lucky, appreciative, and humble enough to learn from those mentors willing to pass on the collective wisdom of generations of lawyers before them, they can then turn this advantage into an enormous benefit for their clients.

What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?

Seeing the hope and light return to a client's eyes at the end of a case.
