Dave Bir is a skilled patent attorney with experience in patent preparation and prosecution as well as opinion and post-grant work. Dave's practice focuses primarily on U.S. and international patent preparation, prosecution, opinion work, and patent litigation in the computer software, electrical, and mechanical arts. Dave has prepared and prosecuted patents that have been successfully enforced resulting in both settlements and multi-million dollar damages awarded by a jury and affirmed on appeal. Having written patents scrutinized by opposing counsel, trial and appeals courts, and a jury, in addition to testifying during trial and associated depositions provides Dave with unique experience and perspective that is applied in drafting every patent application. Prior to joining Brooks Kushman, Dave acquired significant engineering experience in Manufacturing and Product Engineering with General Motors Powertrain Division including networking and troubleshooting of industrial machine controls, prototype machining of automatic transmission components, and design and calibration of automatic transmission software and hardware. Dave's undergraduate thesis was directed to a communication network for a manufacturing facility using manufacturing automation protocol (MAP). After receiving his undergraduate degree in Electrical Engineering (Minor in Applied Optics), Dave was awarded a General Motors Fellowship to pursue a Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering majoring in Electro-optics with a Minor in Artificial Intelligence where he gained experience with various cognitive architectures, programming languages and production systems. Dave's legal education and technical interests led to a published Law Review article addressing the patentability of software during his tenure as a Note and Comment editor for the Wayne Law Review. In his spare time, David enjoys exploring and traveling, from beaches, canyons and mountains, to the variety of culinary and cultural destinations, particularly theater and concerts. Reid is a registered patent attorney with over 20 years of patent experience in the electrical and mechanical arts. He is experienced in all phases of patent prosecution, from formulating an invention disclosure to appealing claims with the Patent Trial and Appeal Board. Reid has experience working with clients of various sizes, ranging from Fortune 500 companies to small start-ups. Reid has extensive experience with a variety of technologies in many industries. Prior to entering the legal profession, Reid was a technical specialist at an automotive OEM. Reid also worked in the Aerospace industry performing conceptual design of launch vehicles and satellites. Rebecca Filiatraut graduated in 1991 from Oakland University with a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature. In 1994 she received her Juris Doctor from the Detroit College of Law. While attending law school she worked at the Public Defenders Office, representing individuals charged with misdemeanors at the 36th District Court in Detroit. After her graduation, she spent several years working for a large and nationally recognized personal injury law firm. It was here that she began her career of handling federal civil rights cases which has spanned over the course of her more than twenty years in practice. Rebecca focused on §1983 civil rights actions involving police and jail misconduct, as well as other complex matters such as trucking and medical malpractice cases. Seeking to further broaden her experience, she also practiced on the defense side for a number of years, successfully defending a multitude of cases, primarily on behalf of a number of different municipalities and police departments, as well as other businesses and insurance carriers across the State of Michigan. After gaining experience on the defense side, Rebecca returned to the work she loved, representing individuals against large corporations and insurance companies in order to help these people obtain rightful compensation for their injuries. Rebecca has extensive trial experience in both state and federal courts on behalf of plaintiffs and defendants, having been involved in some very high-profile and notable jury trials during the course of her career.
