Please describe a case in the last year or two where you made a big difference.
In the past year, there are three cases where each client was being bullied by the other side with had a loud lawyer who intimidated the client before I was hired. In all three cases, we put our heads down and went to work, ignoring the rhetoric and false claims by the other side while we prepared for trial. In each trial, our client prevailed and obtained justice. Most of my work involves trial due to the hypocritical blame-shifting and false claims that are so common in family law cases. We prepare for trial because we are good at trial, and because the courtroom is a level playing field where false and unsubstantiated claims fall flat and destroy what little credibility the bullies may have.
How did you build a successful practice?
Sheer effort over time. My current practice results from countless hours working and reading statutes and case law late into the night and trying case after case. None of it would be possible without the advanced training we have received from places like NITA, Trial Lawyers College, the National Family Law Trial Institute, and special training on cross-examination from Roger Dodd and Larry Pozner.
What should clients look for in a lawyer?
Clients should look for objective signs of skill and ability, including training after law school and some real ratings services, such as Super Lawyers, Best Lawyers or Chambers USA. It is simply too easy for a lawyer to claim, Oh yes I handle that type of work without having any real basis in training or experience, and the law school that a lawyer attended does not tell you anything about skill, ability or judgment. My fellowships in the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers and the International Academy of Family Lawyers are indicators of my commitment to the practice of family law at the highest standards. My board certification by the National Board of Trial Advocacy for Family Law Trials demonstrates my trial skills and experience.
How important is local knowledge to the success of your cases?
Local knowledge is extremely important, but it can be overstated. Lawyers sometimes get drawn into this idea that This judge does this, or That judge does that. Those generalizations are often true, but cases are ultimately won on the facts. I try cases all the time in courthouses where I have never been before and generally do very well, even against local attorneys.
What information can you provide in a free phone consultation?
We are able to describe our practice areas and experience. For calls concerning practice areas that we do not handle, we are often able to give a referral on the phone. If you have a family law issue, I encourage you to visit our free online intake pathway at https://bundylawoffice.settify.com as it is powered by artificial intelligence and very easy to use. After you complete the intake you will receive a free, no-obligation packet summarizing your situation and some of your options.
What information do you need in a free phone consultation?
We need to know the contact name, number, and email address and the full name of all potential opposing parties so we can start working through a conflict check and schedule a meeting.
What differentiates you from other lawyers in your community?
Aggressive, ambitious training and professional development. Law schools lie and tell young lawyers that they are ready to practice law and to try cases. Once I realized that was not true and discovered real advocacy training, I dove into it headfirst and never stopped, and I expect the same from every attorney who works with me. I learn something new every day, and every skills training seminar we attend makes an immediate impact and positive difference for our clients.
What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?
Early in my career, I had some lawyers take the time to give me unsolicited advice and direction that was very helpful. When possible, I enjoy helping other lawyers work through issues related to both the practice and the business of law. Sometimes after I finish a tough case against a lawyer, that lawyer (my former opponent) will call me with a legal question. That is the highest compliment that someone can give, professionally.
What are your other interests in addition to law?
I love boxing, as an exercise and as a sport to watch. I enjoy reading and learning about how our brains work and the biases that we are all susceptible to and risk-assessment as it relates to investments and financial planning.
Are you involved in your community?
Yes, I give back to the community through volunteer work and select pro bono advocacy for clients in need.
