Questions & Answers
Please describe a case in the last year or two where you made a big difference.
A client came to me after a very messy divorce trial. Her prior counsel claimed that they were owed $200,000. They did not give her bills as case was progressing. She paid them over $50,000 for their services and was shocked when they asked for an additional $200,000. Her ex-husband ignored every court order as well as the Judgment of Divorce. I was able to secure prior counsel's abandoning their $200,000 claim for legal fees and employed a little known strategy to collect all amounts owed to my client on the Judgment of Divorce and an award of maintenance (alimony) which will result in almost $300,000 in my client's pocket without ever having to serve a motion for contempt against her ex-husband.
How did you build a successful practice?
My ability to network from the time I moved my practice from Manhattan to White Plains enabled me to build a successful practice. Friends, colleagues in both business and law, satisfied clients, and some marketing have all contributed to my ability to build a successful practice. Hard work and good results are instrumental as well.
What should clients look for in a lawyer?
Ability to listen, ability to empathize, and act zealously on behalf of the client. Addressing a client's expectations at the outset with realistic goals is crucial and that comes with experience in the particular area of law.
How important is local knowledge to the success of your cases?
Extraordinarily important, of course. Knowing the local judges and their particular approaches to matters before them cannot be overstated. I have practiced in this region for over 35 years and am comfortable with the judiciary and colleagues who know my reputation for competence, toughness and fierce loyalty to my client's cause.
What information can you provide in a free phone consultation?
I can quickly perceive the nature of the dispute, degree of difficulty, gage the client's ability to be realistic and succeed as well as describing the process in easy to understand terms.
What information do you need in a free phone consultation?
Basic background information, nature of dispute, means to pay for counsel and experts.
What differentiates you from other lawyers in your community?
What judges, clients, and colleagues tell me is that I am practical, creative and consistent in my approach to resolve cases and not run up unnecessary legal bills. I am problem and solution oriented in difficult practice areas which require common sense solutions rather than engendering more conflict.
What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?
In the matrimonial practice area, and to a lesser degree in business and personal litigation matters which I handle, the emotional toll can be overwhelming. When I advise the client that the process can and will be difficult, then carefully guide the client through the process, and achieve a good result, yielding a happier, satisfied, different person at the end, cannot be more rewarding. That is the definition of a successful outcome which every client wants to achieve with their attorney.
What are your other interests in addition to law?
I love the great outdoors and an am avid cyclist and exerciser. Music is a passion. Concertgoing which I miss during this Pandemic is always a big part of my life, I cannot wait until that returns. I am also a rabid sports fan, but do not wish to offend anyone by revealing my favorite teams in all three major sports. I can and do capably represent fans of the "other" teams!
Are you involved in your community?
Yes. I am very involved in a Charity which benefits families in the tri-state area whose children suffer from severe diseases including cancer. The Charity is Friends of Karen. I have helped raise thousands of dollars over the years participating in their events, including an annual cycling event.I also belong to community based professional groups of collaborative and mediation attorneys and attend many meetings to hone my skills in collaborative law and mediation.
