About Andrew

After receiving his undergraduate education from Drake University, Andy LeGrant attended Drake University Law School. He graduated in May 2006, earning certificates in litigation and dispute resolution, constitutional law and civil rights, and public service. During law school, he participated in Drake's legal clinic, where he represented children both as a student-attorney and guardian ad litem. In those capacities, he handled juvenile delinquency matters and child-in-need-of-assistance ("CINA") cases. Andy also volunteered at both the Iowa Coalition Against Domestic Violence and Youth Law Center during law school.

Employment law and civil rights have been the focus of Andy's legal practice from the beginning of his career. During law school he clerked for a West Des Moines law firm specializing in employment law. He worked at the same firm as an associate attorney handling employment law and civil rights matters almost exclusively for approximately five years. He established LeGrant Law Firm in August of 2011.

Andy regularly reviews and analyzes developments in employment law and civil rights. In April 2010, he presented the case law update at the Eighth Circuit National Employment Lawyers Association's biennial seminar in Minneapolis, Minnesota. His familiarity with legal trends and his commitment to legal scholarship have led to significant success on appeals involving nuanced and cutting edge employment law issues.

In addition to arguing appeals to the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals and prevailing in appeals before the Iowa Supreme Court, Andy has tried cases to juries as lead counsel in both state and federal court. For instance, in its ruling on post-trial motions, the United States District Court for the Southern District of Iowa observed that Andy and his co-counsel "clearly were well prepared for trial and experienced in this type of litigation. The Court has no doubt that the expertise of both lawyers played a substantial role in Plaintiff's receipt of a jury verdict and punitive damages on her retaliation claim."

Questions & Answers

Please describe a case in the last year or two where you made a big difference.

In one of my employment matters, we took our client's unpaid commissions case to trial and prevailed. Yet the defendant refused to satisfy the judgment and, in fact, took steps to avoid my client's satisfaction of the judgment. We brought a second lawsuit, involving new and relatively complex legal theories, which ultimately forced the defendant to pay the judgment in full.

How did you build a successful practice?

I built a successful practice with a passion for workplace justice, a desire to help the underdog, and with down-to-earth, clear communication with clients.

What should clients look for in a lawyer?

Clients should seek an attorney with not only the expertise to handle their particular legal matter but also one who demonstrates an commitment to communicate and work closely with them over the course of their case.

How important is local knowledge to the success of your cases?

An experienced litigator understands strategic decisions involving jurisdiction and venue and will use his or her knowledge of the considerations to the client's advantage.

What information can you provide in a free phone consultation?

From an ethical perspective we are limited in the information we can provide to prospective clients, but it is always our goal that they understand the process and what they can expect from us.

What information do you need in a free phone consultation?

Obviously our potential clients should be prepared to share with us any information pertinent to their legal matter, including important names, dates, and events. In many instances we also request that our potential clients provide us with key documents. The goal is always to gather as much information as possible so that we can best assess the case at hand.

What differentiates you from other lawyers in your community?

I generally operate under the philosophy that my client is my boss. This means that while I advise and counsel my clients, and expect my clients to reasonably cooperate with me throughout the case, I am never forcing any decision upon them. I base my attorney-client relationships on clear and candid communication.

What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?

The most reward aspect is guiding a client through a very difficult situation, both personally and legally, and completing the objective they have presented me. A satisfied and grateful client at the end of a legal dispute is its own reward.

What are your other interests in addition to law?

Fitness, movies, books, and spending time with my family and friends.

Are you involved in your community?

I am an active member of both the National Employment Lawyers Association and its Iowa chapter. I have presented at various legal seminars.
