Please describe a case in the last year or two where you made a big difference.
That's a tricky question to answer because focusing mostly on Estate Planning, Probate and Business Law, you feel like you make a significant difference in all your cases. Probate is a very tough time for the families that retain you as an attorney because they usually have just lost a loved one. I take a lot of pride in my legal work but what really makes the difference is listening to the client and taking a genuine interest in what they have to say about their loved one. It's not only about identifying the potential legal issues in the case but it's also about listening to the client's joyous moments and stories about the loved one. A lot of times the client is nervous about taking care of the estate and paying the bills with no guidance. This can be very stressful when bills are coming in and assets are frozen. I make sure to let them know that I will be there every step of the way to help them through the challenging time, unfreeze the assets as quickly as possible and that I am only a phone call away.
How did you build a successful practice?
Quality legal work, a positive attitude and excellent communication skills. Every client that retains you expects quality legal work but what sets you above and beyond their expectations is stellar communication skills. Establishing a relationship with clients, where they know their attorney will answer emails and return phone calls back quickly as possible is the key. Being available to give updates on their case and giving one on one feedback creates a sense of comfort and trust between the attorney and client; which really solidifies the relationship for repeat business and helps the practice flourish.
What should clients look for in a lawyer?
Competence is expected, so what clients should look for in a lawyer is how comfortable they feel with the lawyer. The lawyer should make you feel comfortable to ask any questions and the lawyer should be able to give answers that are understood by the client.
How important is local knowledge to the success of your cases?
I wouldn't say that local knowledge will make or break the success of a case but it makes the process a lot smoother. Knowing how your local court system and property appraiser functions is a benefit to the case.
What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?
Being of service for people. No matter what type of case walks in the door, someone needs help with an issue. It may be unlocking a checking account, determining a homestead, creating a new business entity or answering questions about Revocable Trusts, but whatever it is someone needs help. Being able to answer questions, ease anxiety and find solutions for people is the most rewarding aspect of my job, as you go home feeling fulfilled every day.
What are your other interests in addition to law?
I love football. I was an All-State Punter in high school and then played Division-1 football for the Troy Trojans in college as kicker. I still get out on the field occasionally, and kick the pigskin around. I am also an avid fisherman and love catching snook, redfish, mangrove snapper, sheepshead and snapper.
