About Babcock
Babcock MacLean is a partner of the Firm and head of the Firm's Tax Department. His practice focuses on a broad range of Federal, State and local tax planning and tax controversy issues. Mr. MacLean consults with business and individual clients to plan their transactions to minimize taxes. Much of his work involves structuring business acquisitions to achieve a tax-efficient result. A substantial part of his practice involves international tax planning and tax treaty interpretation. He also handles administrative and judicial controversies with taxing authorities.
From 1992 to 1997 Mr. MacLean was a member of the Publications Advisory Board of the Research Institute of America (RIA). He has written and lectured on various corporate and individual tax subjects. Mr. MacLean is past President and a Trustee of the Society for the Preservation of Long Island Antiquities and is listed in Who's Who in American Law and Who's Who in America.
Mr. MacLean graduated from Yale College with a B.A. in philosophy and received an M.A. in philosophy from Columbia University. He received his J.D. from Case Western Reserve University and his Master of Laws in Taxation from New York University.
Mr. MacLean is admitted to practice in the State of Ohio, the State of New York, the United States Tax Court, the United States Court of Federal Claims and the United States Supreme Court. He was Chair of the Committee on Personal Income Taxation of the Association of the Bar of the City of New York from 2006 to 2009. He is a member of the American Bar Association (Section of Taxation), and the New York State Bar Association (Tax Section). In 2004, Mr. MacLean was the principal draftsperson of comments by the Personal Income Taxation Committee of The Association of the Bar of the City of New York on proposed Treasury regulations under Circular 230, governing practice before the Internal Revenue Service and standards for written tax advice. In 2005 he was a member of a joint committee of The Association of the Bar of the City of New York which prepared comments on final Treasury regulations under Circular 230.
