About Benjamin

Ben Stein is known primarily as an actor among his American constituents. However, his diverse professional background includes law, political commentary, and speech writing in addition to entertainment. Stein holds degrees from Columbia University and Yale Law School.

Stein was born in Washington, D.C., but grew up in Silver Spring, Maryland. He attended the Montgomery Blair High School in 1962 along with journalist Carl Bernstein and actress Goldie Hawn. Stein then attended Columbia University, graduating with an economics degree in 1956. Finally, he earned a JD – at the top of his class – from Yale Law School in 1970.

Ben Stein's legal career began as a poverty lawyer in Connecticut and Washington, D.C. He then transitioned to the role of trial lawyer for the FTC. Stein also held teaching jobs at the University of California, Santa Cruz and Pepperdine University in Malibu, CA. As a professor at Pepperdine from 1990 to 1997, he taught US securities law and libel law.

In addition to teaching and practicing law, Stein is an author. He maintains regular columns for The American Spectator and is an in-house journalist for Newsmax Magazine. He occasionally contributes to The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, New York Magazine, Los Angeles Magazine, and more.

In addition to writing and law, Stein entered the world of politics. His political career started as a speechwriter and lawyer for President Richard Nixon, and then for President Gerald Ford.

Stein moved on to Hollywood in the 1980s, launching his film career in the movie Ferris Bueller's Day Off. In his acting roles, Stein earned a reputation as a boring, droning character. He also acted in the television series The Wonder Years. Stein is the voice and face of several big-name brands, including Clear Eyes and Sprinkled Chips Ahoy! Cookies. His popular television show, called Win Ben Stein's Money, earned a Daytime Emmy Award before ending in 2003. Stein has appeared in numerous other shows and films, including Seinfeld, Full House, Casper, The Mask, and Planes, Trains, and Automobiles. His voice acting gigs include The Pixies, The Fairly OddParents, and The Emperor's New School. Stein hosted the show America's Most Smartest Model on VH1, and he has appeared on major news networks CNN and Fox News. His entertainment career also includes voice and audio narrations for mindfulness and meditation programs.

Stein, as an economic expert, commented heavily on the US economic recession of 2009. He is as an advocate for conservative issues, and received a Pro-Life Award in 2003. Stein endorsed presidential hopeful John McCain in 2008 and supported future president Donald Trump during his campaign.
