Questions & Answers
Please describe a case in the last year or two where you made a big difference.
I had a client who owed the IRS about $7,000. This was a low income client so we took the case pro-bono, and the first thing we did was re-did his taxes for the years in question, taking into consideration the errors that the IRS had identified. We filed the amended taxes for those particular years and it turned out instead of him owing the IRS $6,000 they owed him over $10,000. It was the most rewarding case because of the surprise and joy the client expressed.
How did you build a successful practice?
Hard work, Advertising, networking, and word of mouth. Word of mouth being the most effective.
What should clients look for in a lawyer?
Unfortunately the general public focuses on superficial factors in selecting an attorney; who has the nicest website, etc. The most important two elements I think are Integrity and Intellect. Integrity because there are SO many ways attorneys can and do take advantage of clients. I see it almost everyday. I've seen firms charge individuals $2,000 for two months of photocopying. I've seen firms intentionally dissuade settlements to keep the matter going and reap more fees. And unfortunately it's hard to gauge someone's integrity by reading their profile on a website or even talking to them for a half hour. But given the opportunity for abuse and the extent of its occurrence, integrity is the most important factor. Second is intellect. Ours is a profession that requires knowledge and aptitude for logic and reasoning. As with anything else there are varying degrees of intellect amongst attorneys. Look at where they went to Law School, and what other expertise they may have. Our firm's modo is "Intellect, Integrity, Compassion". This is what distinguishes us from our competitors.
How important is local knowledge to the success of your cases?
Local knowledge of the Judges and their preferences procedures is important, but not nearly as important as the attorney's intellect and work ethic. At the end of the day the case will be decided on the merits.
What information can you provide in a free phone consultation?
We provide free phone consultation and will answer essentially any question. Generally the questions in phone consultations are 1.) do I have a case, 2.) likelihood of success, 3.) costs benefit analysis of pursuing the case.
What information do you need in a free phone consultation?
Facts of the situation.
What differentiates you from other lawyers in your community?
What differentiates me is the three words you find in my logo ""Intellect, Integrity, and Compassion"". I started at Fordham Law School at age 36, after a long career of being a CPA, having an MBA in Finance from a top ten Business School, and have a long career in Corporate America. Many legal issues Divorce, Real Estate, Tax, Business Law, there's an overlap between Law and Finance/Accounting. Other attorney's often have to hire forensic accountants to navigate the nuances of the financial issues. With me you have an individual with expertise in all of these areas. The reason I went to Law School at such a later stage in my career was because I'd seen so many instances of Lawyers using their legal knowledge to take advantage of lay people instead of using it to help them. I wanted to be a champion for the average consumer. This background gives me a more broader knowledge base than the traditional attorney, and it instills a level of compassion such that I will always act within the client's best interest.
What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?
Winning in Court.
What are your other interests in addition to law?
Being a father of two small children, golf, music, the arts.
Are you involved in your community?
Yes, I'm the assistant coach of my daughter's softball team, and I sit on the Board of Directors of Ripple Effect Artist, and Arete Living Arts Foundation.
