Questions & Answers
Please describe a case in the last year or two where you made a big difference.
In January 2018 I represented a semi-driver who was cited for unsafe lane movement as a result a motor vehicle collision that occurred at the I65s-I70w merge near downtown Indianapolis. A conviction on the citation would have resulted in significant insurance premium increases for my client's employer. We took the citation to trial in traffic court, essentially arguing which driver caused the collision. The Court returned a verdict in favor of my client. The not guilty verdict saved my client and his employer a lot of money in the long run. See, State of Indiana v. George Edward Golden, Jr., 49G13-1702-IF-008796.
How did you build a successful practice?
I have built a successful practice through the guidance and leadership of the four lead attorneys here at Starr Austen & Miller, LLP. The four partners, having over 100+ years of combined experience, have provided me with the knowledge and resources to maintain a successful practice. https://www.starrausten.com/
What should clients look for in a lawyer?
Clients should look not only for a lawyer who has experience in the specific area of law which the problem exists, but also a lawyer who is passionate, well-organized, and accessible. Personally, I find it important to maintain an open line of communication so that my clients are always aware of the status of their case.
How important is local knowledge to the success of your cases?
My familiarity with the local bench and bar can sometimes help give the client a better understanding of the possible relief available.
What information can you provide in a free phone consultation?
I can provide my professional opinion as to how the Courts generally handle particular matters. For example, I frequently refer to the Indiana Parenting Time and Support Guidelines and the property distribution statute when consulting with family law and divorce clients. I also provide the client with a roadmap of what will occur and do my best to provide a timeline.
What information do you need in a free phone consultation?
The client's name and a general description of the client's problem or case.
What differentiates you from other lawyers in your community?
I am very good about returning voicemails and emails. I also do a great job of keeping the client informed as to the status of their case and what to expect by sending letters and copies of pleadings, motions, discovery, etc. When a hearing is necessary, I take the time to prepare my client for their courtroom testimony. In addition, my hourly rate ($150) and required retainer are generally cheaper than what other lawyers in the area charge.
What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?
I love helping people who are in need and obtaining the best relief possible.
Are you involved in your community?
am a board member of Wabash Valley Volunteer Attorneys, Inc., an organization designed to provide equal access to the courts by encouraging local attorneys to volunteer their legal services to low income and indigent people who cannot otherwise afford an attorney.
