Trial Judge Clare E. McWilliams. Land and Lakes Company brought suit alleging that Homewood Disposal Services secretly disposed of commercial waste under the guise of a Village of Dolton residential discount arrangement and thereby breached its contractual duty to pay gate rate for waste disposed of at Land and Lakes' Riverbend facility. Case is significant because Defendant never made a settlement offer. At the commencement of trial, Plaintiff demanded $300,000 and Defendant again offered zero. Trial commenced March 12, 2012. Judgment entered for Land and Lakes Company on May 22, 2012 for $1,618,684.14. Judgment was affirmed on appeal. Opposing Counsel: Anthony P. Steinike and Eric Van Vugt (Quarles & Brady LLP).

Judgment entered in favor of Land and Lakes Company against Defendant Robert B. McManus, individually, for $4,142,058.00. Opposing Attorney: Matthew M. Murphy (Bates and Meckler) and Michael J. What should clients look for in a lawyer?

In a free consultation I am able to determine if the party is in need of professional legal assistance and whether or not I have the requisite skill sets to competently address their needs. Beyond that, there is not much more you can hope to accomplish in a free phone consultation. Once I have determined that the situation warrants legal help, the other party should be willing to devote the time and attention to meet in person and more fully discuss the facts and the law pertaining to their circumstances.

What information can you provide in a free phone consultation?

This doesn't come from me, this comes from my clients. I have been repeatedly told by clients that they consider themselves fortunate to have found an attorney who actually cares about their situation and who is responsive to their questions and concerns. This is a people business and if you don't like helping and talking with people, you should not be a civil litigator.

What information do you need in a free phone consultation?

That's easy. I enjoy helping people and helping entrepreneurs protect and grow their businesses. I don't represent huge corporations, so in virtually all of my dealings, I am speaking with the president or an owner of the business. I find these people to be highly motivated and energizing. I have helped companies grow from one or two employees, to employing 150 people in multiple states. In my own small way, I have contributed to the work and well-being of hundreds of people and that is a rewarding thought.

What differentiates you from other lawyers in your community?

For the last twenty-five years, I was busy running my law practice and working with my wonderful and devoted wife to raise four children. As they get older and more able to stand on their own two feet, I find my interests moving in the direction of history, science and the fine art of tinkering. I like to understand the mechanics involved in tools and equipment and I love the shows on engineering, how things are made, and how the universe works. A little geeky, but that's life.
