About John
A native of Quebec’s Eastern Townships, John originally graduated from the University of New Brunswick in 1979 with a Bachelor of Science (Environmental Biology with a minor in poker playing and horse-track betting) before moving on to McGill University (BA partial) and then the University of Ottawa (LLB 1984). John was the recipient of an award for his court work with the University’s Student Legal Aid Society.
After his call to the Ontario Bar in 1986, John worked as a lawyer in Cornwall and Ottawa before commencing his own firm in Kanata. Rick & Associates eventually expanded to have offices in Kanata and Almonte.
In 2012, Rick & Associates merged with Langevin Morris Smith and John became Senior Counsel to LaBarge Weinstein, one of Canada’s foremost technology and business law firms. John has recently returned “home” to Langevin Morris Smith as their Senior Counsel where he advises and represents major business clients and several large Ottawa homebuilders.
John and his wife Barb have lived in the rural Kanata / Carp area for thirty-some years where they raised their three children. Both Barb and John have been and continue to be heavily involved in a number of local community groups, including many sports organizations, and John maintains his interest in all matters political.
Until he retired in 2016 (sore knees and questionable rebound control), John was a renowned (if not particularly successful) goalie with the West Carleton Oldtimers in Carp. He continues to be a rabid Habs’ fan (and is looking forward to seeing the Stanley Cup return to its rightful place in Montreal) and is also a keen supporter of the “Bring Back the Montreal Expos”. When not working or following les Canadiens, John enjoys his world travels with Barb and the kids and especially his daily walks with his three dogs.
