Hi everybody, my name is Channdeep. Ever since my Bachelor’s degree in law, I was certain of pursuing a career in criminal law. Having worked as a criminal defence lawyer already, Aitken Robertson’s professionalism and commitment to defending the accused in the criminal justice system captivated me. I joined the firm as an Articling Student, and currently, I am working as an Associate at the firm. I have handled cases involving sexual assault, domestic assault, and impaired driving.

During my articling, I learned about the practice of law under the mentorship of experienced criminal lawyers. Apart from learning substantive and procedural law, I learned a lot about people’s concerns and expectations. I mirror the firm’s practice of attention, accessibility and accommodation whenever I interact with clients. Most of the people that I meet are anxious about their case – which is understandable! I always try to alleviate people’s concerns and provide them with a step-by-step guide on their case’s timelines and progress. I strive to familiarise people with how the system works and make them feel comfortable. I believe that the legal systems are made for the people, and not vice versa.

I take a client-centric approach to my work, and I am always on the lookout for any infirmity in the prosecution’s case. Apart from criminal law, I have a profound interest in Charter rights. During my stint as a lawyer in India, I successfully led public interest litigation(s) on the grounds of constitutional breaches by government entities. I believe that to become an exceptional criminal lawyer, one needs to be a constitutional law expert. I am a zealous proponent of continuing professional development, which led me to pursue an LL.M. from Osgoode Hall Law School. My graduate degree further enhanced my understanding of criminal law and constitutional law – both of which go hand in hand in most criminal proceedings. Other than criminal law, I also handle immigration matters. I have experience preparing and filling permanent resident, temporary resident visa and work permit applications. Here at Aitken Robertson, we also deal with criminal inadmissibility cases triggered under the immigration law due to criminal convictions.

The combination of my academic and professional experience significantly adds value to my role as an Associate at Aitken Robertson. Our team works hard to provide one of the highest quality legal services in the GTA.

Before pursuing a career in law, I worked as a manager of a construction firm. My responsibilities included, but were not limited to, generating business for the firm and cultivating professional connections. In my leisure time, I love playing sports. Presently, I am honing my lawn tennis skills and trying to make sure that I am not the worst player on the (tennis) court. I also enjoy photography from time to time.
