About Robert
Robbie was called to the bar in British Columbia in 1991. He began his career as a prosecutor in northern BC before starting his own practice in 1994. After 10 years practicing law Robbie left Vancouver to do an MBA at Cambridge, and was engaged in a number of projects:
Advised BP on changes to their culture in the North Sea to better manage costs
Submitted a €50 million proposal to Enterprise Ireland to seed a new early stage venture capital fund.
Business and Legal Affairs at CPA Global, a London firm building a new business outsourcing legal services to India
Business development for Gambling Compliance, a London market intelligence firm serving the gaming sector
Advised on a commercialization strategy for a new gas metering technology
Business development for a Vancouver biotech start-up
General counsel for an internet start-up in Dublin
Robbie returned to Vancouver in 2008 to found Robert Fleming Lawyers. He is a past member of the ACC and has a particular interest in the opportunity for creativity in the gap between business and law – see the Journal of Business and Legal Affairs.
In addition to doing good work, Robbie has always sought to do some good in the world. He has volunteered on a palliative care ward, done many pro bono cases, and been an active advocate for environmental causes.
Robbie is the father of two small boys. He lives with his family in Vancouver.

Please describe a case in the last year or two where you made a big difference.
We obtained $750,000 for a retired engineer who had been cheated by his business partner. We won a case against Google related to their global search results - Google has appealed and the case is going to the Supreme Court of Canada.
How did you build a successful practice?
Good work and honesty.
What should clients look for in a lawyer?
Answers that you can understand. It is your lawyers job to make sure you understand - if you don't it is not your fault - it is your lawyer's.
How important is local knowledge to the success of your cases?
Being familiar with the style of the local judges matters.
What information can you provide in a free phone consultation?
Usually only an estimate of what it will cost to get to a useful answer to a problem.
What differentiates you from other lawyers in your community?
Business experience outside of law. MBA from Cambridge.
What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?
Winning cases everyone else says are impossible.
What are your other interests in addition to law?
The divine universe. Tour de France. Road biking.
