Questions & Answers

Please describe a case in the last year or two where you made a big difference.

A client told me that after we settled his case, he used the funds to move close to the hospital where he was waiting for a lifesaving transplant. The call came in the middle of the night after relocating, requiring him to be at the hospital in 5 minutes for his transplant. Had his case not settled when it did, he would have lived much farther away and would not have been able to make it to the hospital while the donor organ was still viable. He made it in time, and his life was saved.

How did you build a successful practice?

By being fair and honest with my clients and potential clients, even when it was not in my best interests. I would rather tell a potential client the truth, even if it turns out that they do not retain me at that time.

What should clients look for in a lawyer?

Attentiveness and responsiveness. I try to return all calls with the same business day. That may not always happen, but that is my goal.

How important is local knowledge to the success of your cases?

It is extremely important to know how the local judges might rule on a specific issue or how a local jury might respond to my clients' claims.

What information can you provide in a free phone consultation?

I gather the pertinent information to make a careful analysis of the prospective client's issue and lay out what I believe to be the best course of action.

What information do you need in a free phone consultation?

Who, what, when, where, why and how?

What differentiates you from other lawyers in your community?

I believe my previous careers in church ministry and nonprofit management give me the ability to see the broader implications of issues with my clients' cases, not just the legal implications.

What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?

Navigating my clients through some of life's toughest times.

What are your other interests in addition to law?

Spending time with my family on Topsail Island, doing home improvements, and the occasional cigar with friends.

Are you involved in your community?

I am an elder at my church and support various causes and organizations.
