Questions & Answers

Please describe a case in the last year or two where you made a big difference.

I have two elderly tenants who lost everything in a fire. After years of fighting with the Defendant and his insurance company we won a ten day jury trial in the Massachusetts Superior Court and then fended off an appeal in the Appeals Court, with the Defendant settling on the day before the argument in the Appeals Court for essentially the entire judgment.

How did you build a successful practice?

We build a successful practice simply by always putting the client's interest first. Clients want to know that the advice that you are giving them in any particular situation is based on their best interest, not yours. They appreciate it and success follows. Being smarter than the great majority of lawyers helps as well.

What should clients look for in a lawyer?

Clients should look for intelligence, not just intellectual prowess but wisdom and a bit of "street smarts," and there is no substitute for experience. But most of all they should look for a lawyer who "has their back," who is loyal to them and committed only to getting the best possible result for the client based on all the information available.

How important is local knowledge to the success of your cases?

Local knowledge is often of value depending on the nature of the case. A lawyer that knows his or her way around the local courts, government agencies and other institutions is a very valuable commodity.

What information can you provide in a free phone consultation?

I can most importantly let the client know that if we take on their case, they will have a team that will use all our brains, common sense and perseverance to help them in every way possible.

What information do you need in a free phone consultation?

It is important that the client answer the questions we ask accurately and actually not try to answer a different question. Clients often have much that they want to tell you, which is excellent, but we have very specific questions that a client really needs to focus on so that we can assess the case. It isn't easy to just answer the question asked, in the form it is asked, but there are very good reasons for the questions we ask and it is critical that we get accurate and complete answers.

What differentiates you from other lawyers in your community?

We are very resourceful and indefatigable. It is maybe ironic, but we do not put our own financial or other success before the interest of the client- and as a result, we are very successful.

What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?

The best part of my job is that it is never boring and we get to use our intellect for the "gamesmanship" that comes with practicing law- the trials, the negotiations, the diplomacy - but these aren't just games: We get to help real people from all walks of life, orientations, races, ethnicities and countries (I've represented people born in more than 75 countries!) and have a very real effect on their lives. It is so fun, fulfilling and interesting

What are your other interests in addition to law?

I play guitar in a garage band, a musician and music historian, an avid camper and hiker and outdoors person, I am an avid reader and a huge movie buff, particularly Classic Hollywood and foreign films and I love travelling all over the world.

Are you involved in your community?

I have been involved with the Waltham Community Foundation for decades, serving as it's President in the past. The organization gives money to the Salvation Army, local homeless shelters, local sports and all sorts of civic activities in the area. I've served as a Boy Scout leader on many "high adventure trips" to the Bahamas, mountain climbing in New Mexico and volunteered as a baseball coach in my town, among other activities.
