About Cynthia

Cynthia Groomes Katz is a solo practitioner and founder of Law offices of Cynthia A. Groomes, P.C.  In addition to general immigration practice, her areas of specific focus are: proceedings involving Detention/Deportation/Removal, including appellate work and Aggravated Felony Representation, Criminal Immigration Matters/Enforcement and related ancillary cases.  She has also served the Criminal Defense Bar, Family Law Bar, and other Civil Bars as either consultant/co-counsel or expert witness, as appropriate, on procedures, immigration related consequences of suspected criminal conduct and in plea negotiations, implications of family law actions, and/or other matters as related to immigration law.

Prior to focusing on immigration law, she has worked for The Legal Aid Society in New York City and the National Association for Public Interest Law (NAPIL) in Washington DC.  Mrs. Katz is fully bilingual - competent in Spanish at a professional level.  Her various travels abroad have included living in Scandinavia and in South America.
She is an alumna of Barnard College of Columbia University (A.B. in Foreign Area Studies - Latin America).  She received her J.D. and LL.M. in International and Comparative Law from Duke University School of Law, where she was Staff Editor of Duke Journal of Comparative and International Law.  

Mrs. Katz is admitted to the Bar of the Supreme Court of the United States,
Bar of the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, Federal and State Bars of Maryland, and The District of Columbia Bar.  She is Chair of the Advocacy Committee of the District of Columbia Chapter of the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA), Co-Chair of the Immigration Law Section of the Bar Association of Montgomery County, Maryland, and Board of Directors member and Past President of Barnard in Washington. She is also a past member of the Board of Directors of the Center for Multicultural Human Services and has been repeatedly recognized for her pro bono work by the League of Korean Americans (LOKA).  She has been the recipient of LOKA’s Volunteer of The Year award and is the recipient of the 2007 Advocacy award from AILA – DC.  Mrs. Katz has been interviewed, regarding immigration law matters, on network television news programs and has been a featured guest on the Public Service TV show Law School for the Public.  She also addresses various conferences, groups and organizations on general immigration issues, as well as on topics of specific interest or concern to the respective audience.
