Questions & Answers

Please describe a case in the last year or two where you made a big difference.

We recently settled a case for a client who had tried for several months to get an insurance company to help him pay his medical bills in the amount of about $50,000.00. He was struck by the other driver and suffered a compound fracture of his leg. The insurance carrier refused to make him a reasonable offer to get the $50,000.00 in bills satisfied. He contacted me and within 2 months we had negotiated the maximum available insurance proceeds, negotiated down all of his medical bills, and he recovered about $22,000.00 for his pain and mental anguish damages.

How did you build a successful practice?

My practice has grown based on prior client referrals for good results. More than 50% of my clients come from word of mouth from prior clients who I handled cases for in the past. Our goal is to be very responsive to the needs of our clients and one-on-one interaction with myself or my staff.

What should clients look for in a lawyer?

Since most cases will take a minimum of 6 months to complete, some taking 2 years, you should find a lawyer that you trust and that can communicate well with you. If you don't have a "good feel" for the attorney in your initial meeting, you should find another attorney. The trust between a client and their attorney is crucial in creating a good outcome for their case.

How important is local knowledge to the success of your cases?

All cases are local. This means that your attorney should know the city, county, and courthouse where you case may be filed on your behalf. I have traveled to 52 counties in Texas representing different sides of cases and can assure you from experience, being local matters. I have been "local" here in McKinney and Collin County for several years and am familiar with the attorneys, courthouse, and expectations in the courts. It is an advantage that I get on every case.

What information can you provide in a free phone consultation?

The free phone consultation should be enough for the attorney to determine if there is potential for a case for the caller. Once that is determined, an office visit is necessary on nearly all cases to better evaluate the case, explain the case and its progress, and answer any questions before going forward into representation.

What information do you need in a free phone consultation?

The free consultation allows for me to get valuable information and make an initial determination if the caller has a potential case that we can help them recover damages. Unfortunately for a lot of calls, the costs of representation and time outweighs the potential for recovery and we cannot take the case. However, it is much better for the client to have learned that in a phone call than to have taken the time out of their work day or personal time to come to the office.

What differentiates you from other lawyers in your community?

I can differentiate myself from most other Personal Injury lawyers in that I have been employed by both sides of the claim. For over 10 years I have represented Plaintiffs, those injured by someone's negligence. But, I also worked for 7 years for the insurance carriers (auto/trucking/liability/work injuries) and learned from them how cases are evaluated. This unique experience prepares me to know what the insurance carriers are thinking, how they evaluate, and most importantly what they need in their possession to give the clients the best offer for their case.

What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?

Knowing that people who were injured due to no negligence or fault of their own are able to get a recovery for their damages from the insurance carrier who likely denied or offered them a small amount at the beginning of their claim. Sometimes this is a few thousand dollars, sometimes is it several thousand dollars.

What are your other interests in addition to law?

Other than law I keep busy with grandchildren, woodworking, golf, and local politics.

Are you involved in your community?

I am active with our church and have recently become a volunteer for Habitat for Humanity to put some of my carpentry skills to good use for our community.
