Questions & Answers

Please describe a case in the last year or two where you made a big difference.

Many of my Social Security and Workers' Compensation clients are unable to read and write. They have been pushed around and ridiculed most of their life. I enjoy helping them fight the US Government and private insurance companies to receive what they are entitled to.

How did you build a successful practice?

I started my law practice 37 years ago using my Ford Pinto car (yes, the one that blew up upon rear impact) as an office since I didn't have $ or connections for a real office. I decided that the law office would rise or fall on principles of honesty, great customer service, and outworking the other side. Since moving to Asheville without knowing a soul in town, I have been able to build up a great and very successful law office.

What should clients look for in a lawyer?

When I started, I assumed clients looked for established and the most brilliant legal minds. After 38 years of observing clients, I now believe that clients primarily want a lawyer who will listen to them, understand their problem, explain the solution to their problem, and care about them as a person, not just another client.

How important is local knowledge to the success of your cases?

Local knowledge of judicial tendencies and temperaments is often more important than knowledge of the law. I don't think I would try a case without both types of knowledge, but tend to think local knowledge is more important. I see many lawyers come into Asheville from out of town without any local knowledge and leave with very unhappy clients.

What information can you provide in a free phone consultation?

Many initial questions can be handled over the phone. More comprehensive and thorough discussions should take place in an office setting. I also offer free initial office visits to determine if my office can help the client.

What information do you need in a free phone consultation?

In a free phone consultation, I need basic facts about the circumstances leading to lawyer inquiry. I am most interested in what adverse action has been taken against the client.

What differentiates you from other lawyers in your community?

I have been extremely involved in the local community, serving on the Buncombe County Commission for 20 years. During that time, I learned about what programs and opportunities clients might have to assist them in the short and long runs. I have practiced law for over 37 yrs and have a broad understanding of legal trends, community views, and opinions on disability and accident cases. I believe this experience helps me understand and anticipate most legal problems and issues that a specific case might create.

What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?

The most rewarding aspect of my job as a lawyer is helping the client who has never been empowered or given the advantages most lawyers take for granted. My faith requires me to give back to the community I live in- To whom much is given, much is expected in return. I love representing working people who have legal problems I can help them with.

What are your other interests in addition to law?

My other interests outside of law include local politics (Buncombe County Commissioner for over 20 yrs), youth sports coaching, hiking the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains around my Asheville, NC home, traveling in USA and rest of the world. I have a wonderful wife of 39 years who is my best friend.

Are you involved in your community?

My community involvement includes very active interest in local government, United Way, NAACP, preservation of the beautiful mountains in my Asheville, NC home.
