Please describe a case in the last year or two where you made a big difference.
I represented an individual in a Trust Fund Recovery Penalty Case. He and two friends founded a business that failed. He had not been involved in the administrative work associated with including the employment taxes, but was a signer on the bank accounts, an officer of the company, and signed a majority of the paychecks to employees. The Internal Revenue Service was seeking to impose a $1,000,000.00+ Trust Fund Recovery Penalty. I got involved in the appeal and the Service agreed not to impose the Trust Fund Recovery Penalty on my Client, but did impose it on his two partners.
How did you build a successful practice?
My practice was built on Client Service and pragmatic advice.
What should clients look for in a lawyer?
Clients should hire a lawyer with specific knowledge and training in a field. They should not hire a lawyer just because they know them, they charge the most, or they work for a particular firm. They should hire a lawyer with the background and experience to handle their specific matter.
How important is local knowledge to the success of your cases?
Knowledge of the local Internal Revenue Service is extremely important to some of my cases. However, it is also unimportant to other cases.
What information can you provide in a free phone consultation?
I can generally tell a potential client if I can help them or not. If I am unable to help them I am generally able to provide them two or three names of other lawyers that may be able to help them.
What information do you need in a free phone consultation?
I need to know what goal the potential Client is attempting to obtain, the amount involved, any communications that may have occurred with the government, and if communications have occurred with whom and their job title.
What differentiates you from other lawyers in your community?
I focus on a specific area of law in which I have extensive education and experience.
What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?
Helping ordinary citizens understand their rights and responsibilities with regard to State and Federal taxes.
What are your other interests in addition to law?
I collect tobacco cards from the early 1900s. I also enjoy following college football.
Are you involved in your community?
I am involved in various bar committees.
