Mr. Shohat has been in the private practice of criminal defense since November 1972, twenty-seven years. In that time, Mr. Shohat has handled the most serious, challenging and often the most notorious state and federal cases on the local and national scene. In the last two years alone, Mr. Shohat had defended the former City Manager of Miami and a County Commissioner charged in a highly publicized bribery and money laundering cases, achieving what observers characterize as stunning results for both. In the County Commissioner's case a federal jury acquitted Mr. Shohat's client on 7 of 9 counts, including counts related to bribery, wire fraud and money laundering that were caught on video and audio tape.
Mr. Shohat has and is currently representing numerous professionals (lawyers, accountants, etc.) charged with criminal offenses. During 1999 alone, Mr. Shohat won jury acquittal in federal court for a criminal defense lawyer charged with Obstruction of Justice and in state court for the Postmaster General of the United States Virgin Islands who was charged with rape.
Recently, Mr. Shohat and his partner, Don Bierman successfully defended a prominent Swiss private banker against civil RICO charges. Mr. Shohat has also defended serious narcotics related cases, including Carlos Lehder and Harold Ackerman of the Medellin Cartel, and served as lead counsel in the Cotton Club murder case in Los Angeles.
Mr. Shohat has served as adjunct professor of law at the University of Miami Law School and is a frequent lecturer at law schools and bar associations throughout the United States. He was the legal analyst for the local CBS affiliate on the O.J. Simpson case and has appeared on Larry King Live, CNN Crossfire and other national broadcasts as a criminal law expert. Mr. Shohat is listed in The Best Lawyers in America and the National Directory of Criminal Lawyers.
