Questions & Answers

Please describe a case in the last year or two where you made a big difference.

In August 2013, I won a significant financial settlement for a victim of high pressure sales tactics involving door-to-door sales of overpriced and defective consumer products. We not only got the sale contract voided and her deposit returned but she also benefited from a significant financial settlement. In July 2013, I successfully brought suit and settled several cases against collection agents involving illegal and deceptive collection practices. I recently filed a class action suit against one of the largest debt collection firms in the country in connection with their routinely placing illegal and unauthorized calls to consumer cell phones in violation of the Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA).

How did you build a successful practice?

We built our reputation by focusing solely on educating consumers about their rights and enabling consumers to stand up and effectively exercise their rights, especially as borrowers when they have been treated unfairly by financial institutions or retailers. We are also committed to helping homeowners buy a home they can afford by assisting consumers in closing home purchases and refinancing in a cost effective manner. We have a reputation for providing timely and proactive representation of our clients. Our record of successfully fighting for victims of unscrupulous debt collectors, harassing phone calls and predatory lenders has lead to significant business referrals.

What should clients look for in a lawyer?

In addition to the essential qualities of honesty, integrity and efficiency, a good lawyer must be responsive to their clients' needs, a really good listener and a friend in which you can confide.

What information can you provide in a free phone consultation?

During our free initial telephone consultation or visit, we provide consumers with a quick sense of their legal options and whether they are best represented by our firm or one of the many specialty firm to which we refer business. We also provide a fee estimate.

What information do you need in a free phone consultation?

Most of our consumer clients come to us for advice on getting out of credit card debt, reducing their mortgage payments, avoiding foreclosure or simply how to prioritize their payments. Therefore, we encourage any potential client with credit card or mortgage payment problems to immediately begin preparing a list of all of their outstanding debts together with information on the currently outstanding balances and the applicable interest rate.

What differentiates you from other lawyers in your community?

Having spent much of my career in New York City regulating banks and other financial institutions and representing them in a variety of contexts in New York and Washington, D.C., I find it deeply rewarding to help consumers understand how banks make money and how to get the most out of their relationship with these important, useful but often intimidating institutions.

What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?

That's easy: helping others.

What are your other interests in addition to law?

I am an avid runner, skier, tennis player and Dad. I am also on the Vestry, or otherwise actively involved with, several churches along the Connecticut Shoreline. I am also an aspiring, but so far highly unsuccessful, Karaoke singer. (At least according to my wife and kids and virtually anyone else that has had the misfortune to hear me sing)
