About Evan

I received my BA from Michigan State University in 2003 and Juris Doctorate from Thomas M. Cooley Law School in 2007. I'm licensed to practice law in Virginia, DC and Michigan. My wife and I live and work in Old Town, Alexandria, Virginia and I have been practicing in the DC area for over five years. After working in corporate law in Washington, DC, I started my own practice two years ago and specialize in bankruptcy, family law and estate planning. I am an active participant in the following DC Bar pro bono programs: Bankruptcy Clinic, Family Law Self-Help Center and Probate Center. I recommend each of these programs for those that cannot afford legal help. I am also a member of the Alexandria Bar Association. When not concentrating on my clients, I enjoy spending time with my family and friends here in Old Town and taking our beloved english bulldog Louie to doggie happy hour. I enjoy learning foreign languages and am currently learning French. My wife and I love to travel and have visited China, Greece, Italy, France, UK and don't plan to stop exploring, learning new cultures and meeting new people.

Questions & Answers

Please describe a case in the last year or two where you made a big difference.

While I'd like to think I make a difference for all my clients, my favorite cases are pro bono. One in particular I can remember was a chapter 7 bankruptcy case for a 73 year old women, who after the 341 hearing, cried and gave me a huge hug. It was well worth the time.

How did you build a successful practice?

All success comes with hard work and determination. A successful practice develops in stages as the attorney grows, but you have to keep going, never letting grass grow under your feet.

What should clients look for in a lawyer?

Clients are often under the misconception that tough or mean attorneys are best. In my opinion, it's the opposit. A good attorney has to be a good mediator and communicator. Impasse created by a "tough" attorney's personality only creates more cost to the client.

How important is local knowledge to the success of your cases?

Local knowledge, in regard to law is important procedurally. If you have to constantly look up the local procedures, your wasting you clients money. Local knowledge regarding the culture and demographics of your community is of course important to any successful business. Know the community your servicing.

What information can you provide in a free phone consultation?

After understanding the potential client's situation, I will consult them on what steps are needed to achieve their goals, whether it be divorce, bankruptcy or estate planning. If I can't answer your question on the phone, I will follow up with later correspondence.

What information do you need in a free phone consultation?

You need to know how to address and solve the problem your facing with precise answers.

What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?

Happy clients help me stay in business and continue practicing law.

What are your other interests in addition to law?

Traveling; I work to travel with my wife. My bulldog; doesn't get much better than walking this guy around old town on a warm day. A good steak dinner.

Are you involved in your community?

I live and work in old town, Alexandria, Va and get involved in as much social and charitable activities as my schedule allows. It's a charming city.
