About Evan

Within a year of graduating law school, Evan found himself as the lead attorney in multiple class x felony matters. His early successes as a criminal defense attorney earned him high-profile cases such as predatory criminal sexual assault of a child, child pornography, and multiple armed robberies. Many of his cases consist of domestic battery, DUI and other such misdemeanor offenses, but he has proven his ability to argue and negotiate on behalf of some of the most egregious offenders in Northern Illinois. He brings these experiences and the skills acquired along the way to each and every case. The majority of his time outside of felony courtrooms is spent in Domestic Violence courts. McHenry County has a dedicated judge for such matters and Evan is a frequent attorney before his bench.

Questions & Answers

Please describe a case in the last year or two where you made a big difference.

The cases that stand out the most in my memory are not always the biggest, high-profile cases that I handle, but rather the ones that had the greatest impact for my client. In particular, I recall a domestic battery claim against my client that was ultimately dismissed because the State's Attorney could not sufficiently prove their case. It took much longer than usual to resolve, but we were able to convince the State that the case should be dismissed. This had a huge impact as my client was a school teacher and any charges would have had a detrimental impact on her career.

How did you build a successful practice?

One happy client at a time. Our marketing budget is almost non-existent compared to that of other firms because we rely on our clients referring business. This only works if we have happy clients and we strive to make sure that everyone receives the individualized attention they deserve.

What should clients look for in a lawyer?

Experience. Your lawyer should not only be dedicated to criminal defense, but should also have experience handling cases like yours. A DUI expert is excellent if you have been charged with driving under the influence, but they can offer very little value if you are facing domestic battery or predatory criminal sexual assault charges.

How important is local knowledge to the success of your cases?

One of the obvious benefits of having an attorney is that you have an advocate who knows the law. It is extremely understated that your lawyer also knows the judges and the prosecutors in your case. For instance, our practice is almost exclusively based in McHenry County and we work with the same judges and prosecuting attorneys each day. Our reputation has taken decades to establish and is based on integrity and honesty. The working relationships we have with local court personnel is one of the largest benefits we can offer our clients.

What information can you provide in a free phone consultation?

After speaking with a potential client about the general facts of their case, we can generally provide a price quote. If any defenses are available or if special circumstances exist that warrant extra attention, then we are able to point those out as well. Since we practice almost exclusively in McHenry County, we have access to the court files from our office. Therefore, we will have all of the information about your case that has been filed so the initial consultation, whether in person or electronically, can be as productive as possible.

What information do you need in a free phone consultation?

As stated above, we have access to the court files so your attorney will be prepared to discuss the charges being brought. What we do not have access to at the initial consultation are police reports or witness statements. Documents of this sort will be sought once representation begins, but we will not have them at the first meeting. Since we only have access to the legal information, we will not know any of the facts or circumstances surrounding the incident. This is why open communication is so important in our profession. Lawyers only know the details that are told to them by their clients. For this reason, we encourage open communication and do not bill for phone calls, emails, or meetings.

What differentiates you from other lawyers in your community?

Our approach to client communication provides the most obvious thing separating us from other lawyers. In many law offices, lawyers and staff can be heard sighing when a client emails them or sending a client to voicemail because they don't want to deal with them. This is a huge problem because lawyers rely on what their clients say in order to make decisions about their cases. Without adequate communication, certain facts slip by and the client is the one suffers from it.

What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?

When charges are dropped, it means that the State's Attorney recognizes that my client is innocent and free of all charges. More importantly, charges dropped before trial mean that I saved my client the cost, uncertainty, and pain of trial.

What are your other interests in addition to law?

I am an avid outdoorsman who enjoys fishing, hunting and hiking.

Are you involved in your community?

I pride myself on this community because it is where I was born, grew up, and chose to raise my family. Roots run deep within McHenry County and I am honored to provide legal services to those who live here. I am an Eagle Scout and have been heavily involved in local Rotary groups.
