Went off peak and though we didn’t see the Milky Way because that was the weekend the clouds came and rain came, it was worth it for us. There is a hiking trail next to the developing star gazing lot and camp site, but it’s a hunting trail. Not sure if that’s all year round but be sure if you go, to wear bright colors. Pack warm clothes if you off peak and get there early for a spot if you go during peak season. Bring a red light flashlight for the night time and pull down your trunk and look up!
Only stayed at the overnight observation area. This review applies to that. I love this place. I've never seen the night sky like I had on this trip. Even without a telescope astrophotography on a nice camera phone comes out beautifully. I camped in my car and looked at the sky all night and it was amazing. Check the weather and moon phase before going. You don't want clouds blocking the sky or the moon washing everything out. Cover lights on your car and use red filters on flashlights. Don't be that guy. Be in before dusk when the gates are locked. I plan on returning as often as I can.
Very nice place, free from pollution. It's in mountainous area. Very green. Have nice clean restrooms for men and women, lots of camping spots, clear sky with lots of stars, milkyways. There are three different spots. One is for astronomy that is charging 15$ per night. Here you need telescope, red light. There is a main gate that will be closed after sunset. So you must stay overnight until next day morning 9 am. One campaign spot that is 20$ per night. Here no restrictions. Last one is for public. Anyone can come, enjoy the milkyways and leave any time.
Great state park for star gazing, one of the best experiences in the area and a must do if you have time. Make sure you check the cloud on the website pretty helpful. Low network area and bring food to enjoy the sky for long time
It's safe and clean. Rangers are patrolling the park. People are friendly, lots of families with children. The bathrooms are ok, better than I expected. Keep in mind, there's no electricity so will need a lantern or a flasight. There's a small store about 1 mile down the road from the park that will have everything you may need in case you forgot anything. Great sunsets.
