My wife received a notification some weeks ago from an agency hired by Garfield & Hecht to contact people whose personal financial data had been compromised by a data breach experienced by Garfield & Hecht. She was instructed to contact this agency and invited to sign up for free credit reporting and other available services. We live in a town 90 miles from Garfield & Hecht’s main offices. Neither my wife nor I have ever used Garfield & Hecht’s services, nor have we ever been adverse to any clients of theirs. We have made repeated inquiries of the firm, which never got past a receptionist-level employee. These calls posed two questions: First, what personal financial of my wife did the firm possess, and Second, how did they even come to possess that information? We have never received any response, except a promise by the poor staffer dealing with us that we would receive a call. This is intolerable and unprofessional. As a retired lawyer myself, my first reaction was to sympathize with a law firm victimized as they apparently were. I could only imagine the hassle and disruption flowing from this breach. However, ignoring inquiries from the real victims, those whose data was disclosed, is inexcusable and a poor reflection on the firm’s priorities.
Referred me to another attorney.
