From December 2014 to December 2017 Dowdy represented a defendant I was suing. The defendant had $15,000 to his name, and Dowdy made it seem he was doing this person a favor. It was an extraordinarily simple case, reflected in that Dowdy asked few questions at depositions. nnAfter five months, apparently Dowdy, at $350/hour was incapable of handling this simple case, so the defendant, presumably with Dowdy's blessing, had to add a co-counsel Atkins at an even higher rate, of $450/hour. They proceeded to run up $167,827 in fees! Some amounts prior to October 2016 were forgiven, but all of the $108,436 since then Dowdy demanded from this almost penniless client to be "PAID IN FULL."nnI reviewed the charges, and many appear to be outright fraud. Dowdy and Atkins billed this poor client 3.2 hours at $800 to simply talk about a motion to consolidate the case with another, which was drafted by another defendants' s counsel, and was only 3-pages long, which could be discussed in two minutes. Dowdy billed his client 4.5 hours for a 2.5-page motion for Rule 167 fees, which had only 17 sentences.nnI initially respected Dowdy, but now think he is extremely unethical.
