I hired Richard Hicks to handle an order of protection against a violent stalker. Despite hearing that he had a reputation for dismissing women, I trusted him because of his firm’s reputation and my family’s past experience with them. Unfortunately, that trust was misplaced. My court order required my stalker to stay 500 feet away, but after multiple violations, Mr. Hicks continued the case and, without informing me, allowed the distance restriction to be reduced to 100 feet. I only found out by going to the courthouse myself. When I confronted him, he brushed it off, claiming he had told me, which he absolutely had not. His billing practices are also concerning. He rounds up small tasks to a full hour at $350/hour, making me hesitant to even reach out for necessary legal guidance. Every interaction was condescending. He frequently raised his voice at me and seemed uninterested in actually protecting me. Instead of fighting for my safety, he pushed for an outside agreement that left me completely unprotected. When I asked reasonable clarifying questions, he snapped, “I don’t know what you want me to do!” A statement my coworkers and family overheard, all equally appalled. Rather than advocating for me, he treated my case like a petty dispute, despite the very real danger I am in. I ultimately felt coerced into signing an agreement that benefits my stalker more than me. After I requested he stop being condescending, all communication ceased, except for his assistant sending me the signed agreement and my final bill. Van Matre Law Firm, I expected professionalism and advocacy, not dismissiveness and financial exploitation. I left this process feeling more vulnerable than when I started. Negative 100/5 stars.

Casey Elliott provided top-notch legal service to a friend of mine who was an Air Force veteran with cancer and in hospice care. Casey came to the Hospitals at both Boone and later at VA to get the information needed and to get the necessary legal documents executed by him in a timely manner. Because of her speedy assistance, when my friend passed away only weeks later he did so with the peace of mind that his legal affairs were in good order and that his wife would also be in good legal shape. I am glad I was able to help my friend become a client of Casey and am writing this review on his behalf.

I did not feel my attorney was interested in standing up for me, but they were definitely VERY eager to release me $750 later and after they quoted me an astronomical $4,000 retainer for my divorce. Maybe I would have paid had she shown genuine concern for my case. I’d go ANYWHERE else for representation.

It was a pleasure working with Evan Shoemaker. He listened very attentively to my needs and was very responsive. He is very adept and what he does while being kind, caring and efficient. He was very empathetic and compassionate when interacting with a disabled friend in court. He was responsive to my phone calls and emails and basically made an uncomfortable situation easier for all of us. I highly recommend his services!

I worked with attorney Gretchen Yancey in the past two years. She is an amazing person to work with. Stereotypically we all worry about how costly to hire an attorney for a case. Gretchen is absolutely not a money-driven lawyer. She always focuses on how to get the problem solved and often solved it in a pleasant way other than led a “dog fight.” She is a true deal for a family-case attorney!
