Questions & Answers

Please describe a case in the last year or two where you made a big difference.

I was hired by a divorced mother who was involved in litigation with ex-husband over their special needs 8 year old son. Mother and father had received a notice from the boys school that they may have to remove him due to behavioral problems. Father had a school near his house that had a program for the boy. The court was leaning toward giving the father custody. Mother then hired me to argue against doing that. I went in and argued that the boy had not actually been kicked out of his school, and that the child had been in Mother's primary care for the past 6 years. Changing custody because he might get kicked out, is insufficient justification for the damage that would be done to the boy in losing his primary caretaker. The court agreed with me, and left the child with mother.

How did you build a successful practice?

Well, I give great personal attention to my clients. I listen to them when they describe their situations. I am empathetic to their situation, and I work hard to get them the outcome they desire. I am creative in my arguments to the court. I am also direct with my clients, I tell them what I think a court will do, and what they won't do. So I manage client's expectations.

What should clients look for in a lawyer?

Honesty, and empathy. Do they listen. Do they give you the time necessary to explain your case. Do they care about you, or just your money. You will know after the first billing cycle. Experience is also critical.

How important is local knowledge to the success of your cases?

It is important. Even though the Family Law statutes apply throughout the State, each court has its own local rules and procedures.

What information can you provide in a free phone consultation?

I can provide a general framework of what needs to be done in a case, or what laws apply to their situation. I can give them a general idea of how long their matter may take to completion, and what overall costs could be.

What information do you need in a free phone consultation?

Ideally, the client would be able to provide a case number (if there is one), and a general narrative of what the facts are (eg: children, length of marriage, gross incomes, assets, debts, etc.)

What differentiates you from other lawyers in your community?

I have been practicing Family Law for 28 years. I am a Certified Family Law Specialist. I put my clients interests ahead of my own.

What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?

Seeing that justice is done. Forcing bullies to be fair. Making sure children are protected.

What are your other interests in addition to law?

I like to travel, read and garden. I like socializing with my family. I have four kids of my own and have been married for 31 years.
