Questions & Answers
Please describe a case in the last year or two where you made a big difference.
We were hired by an individual who was run off the road by an 18-wheeler. There was no contact between the vehicles so the insurance company of the 18-wheeler argued that they should not have to pay our client any money. We disagreed with the insurance company's position and sued. After a year of litigation, numerous low ball offers and three days before trial, the insurance company agreed to pay our client $2,000,000.00. While that amount of money does not undo what happened to our client it does relieve financial stress from him for the remainder of his life.
How did you build a successful practice?
Hank and I built a successful practice by always putting our clients first and fighting for them day in and day out. Rare is the case that you come across a reasonable adjuster on the other end, which means you have to fight aggressively to get fair value for your clients. That is what we do.
What should clients look for in a lawyer?
When shopping for lawyers, a potential client needs to make sure that he/she will always be able to talk to their lawyer. The vast majority of personal injury firms are set up in a way in which the client hardly ever talks to a lawyer. That is not how we operate at Sutliff & Stout. If a client wants to talk to us, they know they can pick up the phone or just come in to our office. Communication is key.
How important is local knowledge to the success of your cases?
Local knowledge is a factor in being successful in a personal injury case. A lawyer must always know the local rules for the court in which the case is pending.
What information can you provide in a free phone consultation?
During a free initial consultation, we can let the client know if their potential case sounds like one that we could take on. Sometimes that determination requires a review of relevant medical records, but we always make it a point to get back to potential new clients as soon as possible to let them know whether we can help.
What information do you need in a free phone consultation?
It is always helpful to have as much information as possible during a free initial consultation.
What differentiates you from other lawyers in your community?
The thing that differentiates us from most personal injury law firms in Houston is the time we spend on each case. We are not a volume firm like most firms. In other words, we are very selective in the cases we take. This, in turn, allows us to dedicate the appropriate time to each case. And to have constant contact with our clients.
What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?
The most rewarding aspect of our job is when we get thank you notes or drawings from kids that we help.
What are your other interests in addition to law?
Both Hank and I have families. When we are not working, we enjoy spending time with our families.
Are you involved in your community?
We are very involved in our communities. Both Hank and I serve on various charitable organizations. We also offer free cab rides during the holidays to prevent drunk driving and we also have various scholarships to benefit local youth.
