About H.

H.J. Staas is one of the founding partners of the law firm of Staas & Halsey. He was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1938. Mr. Staas received both engineering and arts degrees in Engineering Physics and Applied Sciences from Lehigh University in 1960, and a law degree from Georgetown University in 1964. While at Georgetown, he was a staff member of the Georgetown Law Journal.

During law school, Mr. Staas was associated with the Washington Patent Operations of the General Electric Company in Washington, D.C., where he directed the company's electronics group. Prior to founding his own firm in 1968, he was associated with large private firms in New York City and Washington, D.C.

During his career, Mr. Staas has been actively involved in virtually all aspects of intellectual property law, including preparation and prosecution of patent applications before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, conducting interference proceedings and appellate procedures before the Board of Patent Appeals and Interferences of the U.S. Patent Office, and litigation in the U.S. federal courts and before the U.S. International Trade Commission, encompassing a broad range of technologies.

Mr. Staas is admitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, and many of the federal district and appellate courts in the United States, including the District of Columbia, the state courts of Virginia and New York, and the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

Mr. Staas is a member of the American Bar Association, the American Intellectual Property Law Association, the Licensing Executives Society, the Patent, Trademark and Copyright Division of the Virginia and District of Columbia Bars and the Bar Associations of the District of Columbia, New York and Virginia.
