About Herbert
Herbert P. Phillips, currently in his 51st year at the Bar, is actively engaged in the private practice of law as a Senior Partner at the law firm of Phillips, Gerstein & Channen, LLP, and has been a partner since its establishment in 1961. Having been born and raised in Haverhill, Massachusetts, he has kept his practice in the Haverhill area throughout the years. His basic areas of practice consist of tax law, estate planning, probate and estates, business law, real estate, health care and business organization. Mr. Phillips earned a Law Degree (J.D.) from Boston University School of Law (recipient of the American Jurisprudence Prize and U.S. Law Week Award) and was admitted to the Massachusetts Bar in 1957. He did his undergraduate studies at Bowdoin College (B.A. 1954) and, in addition, earned a Masters of Law (LL.M.) in Taxation at the New York University School of Law in 1958. He was appointed as an Attorney-Advisor to Judge Clarence V. Opper at the U.S. Tax Court in Washington, DC (1958-1961).
Over the years, Mr. Phillips has represented hundreds of business organizations and entrepreneurs in their multi-faceted projects with special emphasis on financial, tax and estate planning. Not only has he been engaged primarily in New England, but his activities have extended to California, Louisiana, Toronto and New York, to name a few. In addition, during his career, Mr. Phillips handled affairs for three of the largest health care providers in Massachusetts. Mr. Phillips' underlying theme has and always will be to personally service the needs of the client at all material times.
Mr. Phillips is a current member of the Haverhill (President 1982), Boston, Essex County, Massachusetts and American Bar Associations; Massachusetts Conveyancers Association; Merrimack Valley Estate Planning Council, and Senior Volunteer Lawyers. He was a member of the Hearings Committee of the Board of Bar Overseers for Essex and Middlesex Counties, being involved with discipline proceedings for lawyers (1997-2007). In addition, he was a past member of the City of Haverhill Planning Board (1961-1963) and City Solicitor (1978-1979). He was a former Assistant Professor of Taxation at Northern Essex Community College, Haverhill, MA (1976-2001). Over the years, Mr. Phillips has been a participant in many civic and religious non-profit institutions, including directorship at Camp Bauercrest, Amesbury, MA for 25 years.
