Questions & Answers
Please describe a case in the last year or two where you made a big difference.
A case that had made a hug difference was a case where a business was audited by the state of New Jersey for the sales and use tax, income tax and employment taxes. With my audit defense strategy, I was able to finalize a deal where the business paid only 15% of the initial proposed assessment. The deal was reached after I pointed out mistakes that the New Jersey auditor made, and after I made arguments about the taxability of certain products and services. Another case was where family was denied the Earned Income Tax Credit, which ended up being almost 50% of their income for the year. I challenged the IRS's position and the family quickly received their much-needed tax return, rather than having to pay a tax deficiency that they couldn't afford. The last case that has recently made a big difference was a corporation provides cloud computing services to customers in states across the country, but they used a boilerplate contract with affiliates that contained bad language that increased their tax liability by hundreds of thousands of dollars. I caught the mistakes, advised the company's attorneys regarding the bad contract language, and researched their liabilities in the relevant states so that they could comply without having to worry about disastrous audits.
How did you build a successful practice?
I have built a successful practice by staying fully engaged in the law so that I can represent my clients as effectively as possible. It's all about hard work. Foremost, listening to my clients is something that is immensely important and find to that my successful representation always comes from the discussions that I have with my client
What should clients look for in a lawyer?
A client should look for a lawyer who they can actually talk to directly when they need to. The facts from the client's mouth are often much more important than the law that the lawyer is analyzing. Also, the client should talk to the lawyer to make sure the lawyer at least seems like he knows what is going on in your case.
How important is local knowledge to the success of your cases?
Knowledge of local rules, case law, and facts of the case are the keys to success in most cases.
What information can you provide in a free phone consultation?
First and foremost, whether or not you even need a lawyer. The last thing I would want to do is waste my client's money. Second, whether or not you have a case, and whether or not the law provides for some sort of remedy. If you are on the defense, whether from the IRS, other government agency, or another private citizen, then you can learn what your potential defenses are.
What information do you need in a free phone consultation?
During the free consultation I would need a name, address, phone number, emails (if available), what happened, where it happened, what you would like the lawyer to do for you.
What differentiates you from other lawyers in your community?
What differentiates me from other lawyers is that I am well-rounded. My LL.M. in taxation from Georgetown Law makes me an expert with tax law issues, but it also helps in other areas including litigation and representation before any government or administrative body. I am also an expert in legal research, I will develop legal theories, defenses, and strategies based on the most current and contemporary jurisprudence.
What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?
Helping people is the most rewarding aspect of my job. My job is not done unless I help my client, and helping people in my community is very rewarding.
What are your other interests in addition to law?
I love to go snowboarding, watch sports and movies, and read.
