About Israel
Mr. Israel G. Mella is the Firm's Legal Consultant on International Humanitarian Laws and Philippine laws, as they relate to clients' immigration concerns in the US . He hails from Magallanes, Sorsogon, a rustic town in the southernmost part of Luzon , the Philippine Islands.
Mr. Mella is a writer first, and then a lawyer. In the late seventies, he co-authored three epic books about the former Philippine President, Ferdinand Marcos, entitled "Marcos: The Young Warrior;" "Marcos: The Politician;" and "The Child is the Father of the Man. " Mr. Mella obtained his Bachelor of Laws degree from the Ateneo de Manila School of Law, in the Philippines , and was admitted to the Philippine Bar in 1985. Prior to this, he obtained his Bachelor's Degree, major in Journalism, at the University of Santo Tomas in Manila . Mr. Mella's career spans eighteen years as counselor-at-law, litigator, human rights advocate, and crusader.
During Mr. Mella's law practice, he was employed by the Ateneo de Manila University, as Assistant Director for its Human Rights Center, from 1987 to 1989. He monitored humanitarian rights cases, gave lectures and workshops toward improvement of administration of justice, and liaised with local and international lawyers' groups, civic, and non-profit cause-oriented associations. Later joining the Faculty of the Political Science Department of the De La Salle University in Manila , he taught government and constitutional subjects to senior college students. Mr. Mella was also a consultant, and subsequently, Senior Legal Officer of the Philippine government's Human Rights Commission, where he served for a year from 1987 to 1988. His affiliations include Amnesty International, Presidential Task Force on the Improvement of the Administration of Justice, Task Force Detainees of the Philippines , and the Integrated Bar of the Philippines . Mr. Mella resumed the full-time practice of law in 1990, which he registered as "Law Firm of Mella, Concepcion & Associates," and since then, devoted himself to litigation work and counseling of clients. After obtaining a grant from the Ford Foundation he traveled to the US for internship training on Humanitarian Law.
Debunking the theory that writers are failed businessmen, Mr. Mella served as Editor for a community newspaper, The Metropolitan Newsweek, which is circulated in Caloocan City , Philippines . Mr. Mella's secondary languages include Spanish, Tagalog, and Bicolano.
