About Jack

Upon graduation, Jack Gruenstein served as the Trial Attorney for the Interstate Commerce Commission for three years. Mr. Gruenstein was an associate with a prominent civil and criminal litigation firm in Philadelphia for two years and thereafter was a solo practitioner until joining Vaira & Riley in 2001.

Mr. Gruenstein handles both civil and criminal litigation matters. He has tried over 50 jury cases, as well as a substantial number of non-jury trials. Mr. Gruenstein successfully defended an AFSCME District Council Vice President accused of embezzlement from a union hospital in a multiple-defendant, six-week trial resulting in the only acquittal in the case. Among Mr. Gruenstein's other high profile defense cases was State v. Grossberg, a Delaware case involving the death of an infant.

Mr. Gruenstein has represented numerous corporate employees and officers in civil and criminal matters in both state and federal courts. In a malicious prosecution/civil rights case in Detroit, Michigan, Mr. Gruenstein was part of the trial team that obtained the then highest damages award to date awarded by a Michigan jury. Mr. Gruenstein also won a reverse-discrimination civil rights suit on behalf of an employee against the Philadelphia Housing Authority. In addition, Mr. Gruenstein has handled complex matters on behalf of claimants in insurance company rehabilitation and liquidation proceedings in the Commonwealth Court of Pennsylvania. In certain cases, Mr. Gruenstein also serves as a Special Hearing Master to Mr. Vaira in his role as the Independent Hearing Officer of the Laborers' International Union of North America.

Mr. Gruenstein is currently on the Board of Directors of The Gershman Y in Philadelphia.
